I’d never been to a bike meeting before today, and I know little about specific models etc, but I like most things with an engine…especially if they have some history, so if I have this wrong, I’d be happy to be corrected.

This (I believe) is a 500cc Manx Norton circa 1954 still doing what it was built for – racing!

This is my first attempt at photographing bike racing, so just getting some half-decent shots was my intention today – I think I’ve bagged a few worth uploading, so here’s the first!

Hmmm, not bad at all for a first attempt! This is quite nice. Let’s see some more!

  • Thanks Ben!
It was apparent to me that I really needed a HSM lens as the Sigma uses the camera motor for focusing, and was struggling with the bikes as they approached, so a panning shot was my best option as it didn’t need much variation in focus.
I tried a pre-set manual focus with a small aperture for a decent DoF, but the high ISO needed resulted in too much noise.
Anyway, it’s all good practice! :-)

Practice, play…. call it whatever, just keep doing it! I’ve taken my camera to the race track from time to time with dismal results, so I know how tricky it is.

  • You’re absolutely right Ben.
I enjoyed the challenge of working with a new motorsport subject. Bikes behave differently to cars. Cars usually have just one line through a corner…not so with bikes! And so I realised after the event finished that I need to observe the subject more.
I enjoy having variety in my photography….I’m always moving from one subject to another…from one technique to another – it’s this mobility that keeps me interested.

Paul! for a first this is great and what a bike – the Manx is one of my favorites – so is this shot – very well done mate top stuff :-))

  • Thanks George – appreciated!
I attended a speed trial at the weekend where real vintage bikes (e.g. Douglas, Norton, Triumph etc) were up against some quite modern stuff – seeing an old bike out-perform a contemporary sports bike was something special!
