A 1916 Fowler Ploughing Engine. No.14257 Reg KE2494 owned by Mr M Jones, Droitwich, Worcs. at the Heddington Steam Fair, Wiltshire, UK.
These magnificent specialised engines were a fairly common sight in the English countryside as they cultivated the land before the introduction of the Diesel tractor.
Working in pairs at either end of a field, they would pull a plough or a cultivator steered by an operator across the field and then back again, moving along after each pull until the whole field was finished.
I was lucky enough to be part of a small group of enthusiasts who worked on restoring a pair of these engines in Essex in the 1970s.
