Lincoln

The canal network in the UK was once the main method of freight transport throughout the country having it’s beginnings in the Industrial Revolution in the 18th Century until fierce competition from the railways resulted in its decline.

It was in the 1960s that the final nail in the canal’s coffin was hammered-home with development of the main trunk roads and motorways. Before that, traditional 70ft ‘narrowboats’ such as Lincoln with their ‘roses and castles’ paintwork were a common sight on ‘the cut’.

Nowadays, canals are used mainly for recreational purposes, both by boaters and anglers, yet still on occasions you may be lucky to see a traditional narrowboat like Lincoln that has been lovingly restored.

Great photo Paul,it is sad that those days are gone.In the mid 1970’s,we had a holiday on the canals around Cheshire. It was great,so relaxing. One morning,a horse drawn boat passed us,we had to help them move the tow rope over our boat.

Thanks for your comment Tramper. I’ve not met a horse-drawn boat on my travels yet.
I had my first canal holiday in early March of 1973 with a bunch of friends on the Leicester arm of the Grand Union and on the first morning awoke to find the boat ‘iced-up’ – we had to break the ice around the boat in order to get moving!
I’ve had a week on the cut almost every year since then, and I still get a real buzz when I come across a vintage boat loaded up with coal and hearing the characteristic sound of it’s slow-revving diesel engine.

Paul this is magnificent. When I see a Narrow Boat it always makes my hart race, we come to the UK once a year and have had two Narrow Boat holidays. It is just the best of the best ! In all my world wide travels that is still my dream holiday, we had so much fun. We did the Llangollen route and the Four Counties. MAGIC !!!!!
    Kind regards out of Africa

Thanks ever so much for your kind comment and tales of your canal holidays Sandra.
I too have ‘done’ the Llangollen, but have yet to have a go at the Four Counties Ring.
Maybe we’ll meet up at a flight of locks one day!

I hope so ! The Four Counties is not as scenic as the Llangollen route. We also made one mistake with the Four Counties we did it in 7 days !!!! BIG MISTAKE we nearly did not make it you actually need at least 12 to 14 days if you want to do it Narrow Boat style …................ got to stop at every pub LOL
