Castle Combe

This well-known English village gets featured on everything from calendars to chocolate box lids!
I’m fortunate to live only a few miles away, so managed to capture this classic scene in the early morning before the tourist coaches arrived!

Castle Coombe I believe. Where they filmed the dock scene in doctor Doolittle.

    Great image. :)

  • Paul Woloschuk replied

    Correct Richard.
And also where Sir Ranulph Fiennes imfamously planned to blow up the temporary dam which had been built to create the Dr Doolittle harbour as he was offended by it’s construction in such a pretty village! As a result, he and a co-conspirator were discharged from the SAS.

Sometimes, even though it may have been the subject of many, many photographs before, you just have to capture a particularly attractive scene yourself.
It’s all part of the fun of photography!

Paul … this is … amazing!!!! Glorious, glorious capture!!!!! You’re a genius!!!! I’ll tell you a little story … loooooong ago, when I was about 15 or 16, my life was drawing. I was teaching myself how to paint, oil paint back then, no acrylics. National Geographic was my bible … I constantly drew from their pages. This image .. almost exactly as you’ve snapped it, was one of their features. I drew … and painted it. Still have it!! Years later, I found an engraved print of the same spot … of course I couldn’t help buying it, and it hangs in my dining room!!! To see YOUR image … so fresh and bright and perfectly detailed is a joy I wish I could describe!!!!! this is magnificent!!!!! And I’m thrilled to see it!!!!

  • Paul Woloschuk replied

Thank you so much for your fascinating story Lois.
I’m pleased that my image gave you such pleasure and reminders of the past.

It wouldn’t look so beautiful at this time of year, but the gloomy seasons make you even more appreciative of the nicer times!

We have just come back from the UK and it was my first visit there in the winter. I must say even though it was cold I still loved it. The frosty mornings/days is just beautiful. We where in Driotwhich SPA with friends and traveld a lot around there – as you can see from some of my photographs LOL

  • Paul Woloschuk

    Paul Woloschuk

Yes, it has been a bit nippy in the last few weeks! Glad you had a good time though!

What a beautiful and peaceful looking composition Paul and so full of Old English charm, very well composed and so good that you got there in the early morning to avoid the crowds and get the best conditions of the day, I can see a trip up the M5 is on the cards soon,
    Regards, Rod.

  • Paul Woloschuk replied

Thanks Rod – we’ll probably pass each other! You’ll be heading north, and I’ll be heading south!

Paul … congratulations on your Feature in Cottage Style ... I am so happy to see it again!!!!! A clink of the coffee mugs across the miles, my friend!!!!!

  • Paul Woloschuk replied

Coffee?? A traditional English cream tea is more appropriate Lois! ;-)

  • Lois Bryan

    Lois Bryan

... laughing … heavens above … what WAS I thinking?? Sooo sorry … my fave is Twinings’ Earl Grey … will that do And yes, I DO know to pour the boiling water OVER the tea bag!!! ... still laughing …

  • Paul Woloschuk replied

Twining’s English Breakfast Tea would be my choice…and it must be made in a pot, not in the cup – the tea must have room to infuse ! ;-)

Hmmmm – time for some scones with a dollop of clotted cream I think!

  • Lois Bryan

    Lois Bryan

... well of course I have English Breakfast, too. And … would you prefer a china pot or pewter???
