Patience

Charcoal and chalk, 80×45 cms.

This piece was done when I was quite down. I think it shows in my work, It is unavoidable in art. Emotions will translate themselves into lines and shades unconsciously. Kirsty posed for me and I believe she was very down as well. Ah, well. Solace in art? Truth, maybe. Maybe not.

Fortunately it does not diminish my skills, only my confidence. It is very clear to me which works have been done in times when I have been down: Small acts of Kindness, Funereal and Exit Music, etc. They all bear this soft hesitation.

I wasn’t thinking of the Guns n roses song when i named it. At all.

    Lowdown…..it bears patiente in this..
    And self-recognition of our vulnerability.
    I do not know why but a soul looking outside a window.. half- hidden by curtains… is quite melanchilic… and dreamy.
    This girl.. is fighting against her wish to remain in bed… and getting out..and find the sun and rain again.
    And the whole is a complex simplicity of emotion, beauty and stillness…. vibrating from within.

    This is absolutely beautiful.

    This is a perfectly captured heartfelt image… To me, this young woman’s form portrays a sense of anxious contemplation… Like she is starring into space yet her mind is racing with confusing thoughts. Maybe she has lost a love one? Maybe she is unsure of her future…Or maybe she is just alone.

    The way you have created the duvet is brilliant too. Much depth and texture and looks real enought to touch. They also look worn and well used, like she has been sitting there for hours, possible days, with nothing but her thoughts.

    Really is lovely.

    It touches that feeling of calmness when the ‘to-do’ list is long, and the day may have been hectic, but when you take the time to reflect on the bigger sense, a calm washes over and you realize all good thing will happen in all good time;
    Beautiful work!

    thank you jolie! i think you have a very positive reading of this piece. it was a difficult time for my then girlfriend (kirsty) and I as we both fought despair. and poverty. that didn’t help! the extent of detail in the cloth is because of the degree to which the confidence of my marks evaporated as my damned bipolar poisoned me again… but this means more than anything that though the fluidity of sweeping line is marred becuase i am busy shaking and crying and so forth, the minutiae gets more attention. it took me a long, long time. thank you.
