Through a GLass Darkly
Through A Glass Darkly.
By Paul D Robertson
Pastels
140 cms x 97
I like this piece very much. Sometimes in my work I can witness myself taking leaps of quality, and I believe that this is one of those times.
It is an indescribable sensation to see my own hands make something such as this. I begin the with a person, a woman, before me, some materials – paper, chalk, paint.
At the end of the slow still hours quickening my fingers, I surface from the fugue and wake from the trance of working. And sometimes I have something before me that is beautiful that did not exist, that what the world did not hold before I began. And it will last for centuries.
I love the idea of obscured reflections and scattered and refracted light – my desire to work is pushed further every time I stumble upon something I know I must pursue.
In many of my works, whenever it is practical, I will place a left-hand print on a wall or smudging a piece of glass. I have done this for years, and I will never stop. Recently the idea occurred to me that since this has become one of the defining symbols within my work, I could execute a piece based entire on the idea. So I made it happen. I forced it into existence.
And I am so left handed, you see, that I almost walk with a limp.

Love this one. I’ve been trying to work out her mood. Whether she is just melencholy, or if it’s tormented, or confused. Nevertheless, it’s captivating.

Helen McLean
gorgeous.
NudieJane
I just don’t buy the pose. The feet are otterly improbable. Unpheasant to pose for any length of time like this – makes me uncomferretable.
Lara Allport
she is so small and beautiful, great work
Cathie Tranent
Stunning.
BLYTHART
Nothing wrong with her feet; ask Nudie Jane to show us her paintings anyway – she still hasn’t put any on :) I’m sure your model took a rest occasionally anyway. A truly memorable painting and it uis going onmy list of Favourites for sure.
pauldrobertson
thanks for your defense dave@!!!! i think – i suspect! that nudiejane is a figure from my haunted past – model not artist with whom i shared many giggles… not seen her for a while and truly not sure if it is the same person. still. HI JANE! if that is you…!
(going to post this to her or something)
and thank you one and all for your generous comments. this remains a favourite of mine also.

This is very, very nice. Love the colors and the execution is impeccable. I, too, love obscured reflections and scattered light. When I take photos that aren’t self-portraits (ha!), I tend to focus on shop windows, where you can see three or four different worlds at once.

Jim Phillips
When a painting speaks to you it’s an excellent chance that it will be an enduring piece of art.
I can feel the emotion in this work. It tells me of a young woman who is asking herself questions that will soon have to be answered.
Your technique is excellent.

Stunning pastel piece, Paul.
Very good form and pose of the model. The skin tones and window light, and of course, the slightly distorted reflection, elevate it to pure art.
Excellent!

I love what you said about the “indescribable sensation of [your own] hands making something like this” – I know exactly what you mean by that, it’s something I experience every time I do art. There’s something about realising your hands have created the thing in front of you, that it’s your own expression which lies before you that cannot be summed up in words, for it’s all in the picture. =]
This is amazing, I want to start using pastels soon, and I’ll definitely look to your work for inspiration.
