One night the boy became a fox
A personal one.
Please read slowly.
x
One night the boy became a fox belongs to the following groups:
Melbourne & Victoria and The Word TreeOne night the boy became a fox.
He sighed off his skin in the moonlight
Let all time fall away from him
Shook off a moniker.
In its place a miraculous pelt
- And the sharpest teeth yet.
It was the love song that beckoned him outside
In the small hours,
To breathe the frozen air
And feel the dirt under bare feet.
Something once dormant is awakened
An unabashed want to run
To howl
To tear through old flesh
...
To both invoke a tempest and brave the fall out.
Once, the night used to breed empty promises for a boy with a name
Once only fear and shame
But the divide is no more,
Now the nameless one owns the night.

Lovely read Paul. I was waiting for my 200MB Photoshop file to save, and typically that means a couple minutes of boredom and impatience, but using that time to read this lifts my imagination. After reaching that point in life where I spend most of my time on work I desire these kind of moments of wildness and freedom.
Paul Compton replied
We all do Mui-Ling. Thank you for reading this. I hope all is well with you : )

There are a bunch of Japanese folktales about foxes turning into people and playing tricks and illusions on humans. This kinda reminds me of them. Rock on, Kitsune-boy
Paul Compton replied
Yes! Yes! I love these amazing tales. The fox is a trickster in many cultures and a often considered a supernatural being that mediates between worlds. Thank you for reading tobytoby : )

A truly magical piece yourself, Paul – brave and enspirited, to metamorphose into what it is we must become and then to own it – brilliant metaphor. And a very gifted and imaginative style! I’m as impressed with your abilities as a writer as I am with your talent as an artist. Lovely work!
Paul Compton replied
Lianne, you are too sweet. Thank you so much for that wonderful and thoughtful comment. I appreciate the support more than you’ll ever know. Thank you : )
greeneyes
I know that feeling, of the calling at night – like someone elses blood is running in your veins – you have started a hunt(a yearning) in these words – pray tell, what is the prey?
have you ever looked up what foxes symbolize – it is rather interesting
I used to pass them late at night when I was walking home aroung Hampstead Heath We would cross paths, as they prowled from the moon light into shaded veils of buildings and trees
Paul Compton replied
Yes I have. Foxes are generally considered tricksters and have the power to “travel between worlds”, this probably comes from the fact that they are resourceful and can live anywhere. They are majestic creatures to me. I often take walks around midnight and see them playing carelessly with each other on the streets when no-one is around. When you see a wild animal and it looks straight at you…that is one of my favourite things in the world. Thank you for commenting greeneyes. Best wishes to you : )
greeneyes
yes i too know the held gaze of a fox ….I will keep watching you, i will add you to my favourites
– keep followiing foxes
Luke Downes

Hi Paul, I’ve referenced this piece here (in a description accompanying a fable of female-feline transformation). I really adore the metaphors in your tale of a boy becoming a fox, especially To both invoke a tempest and brave the fall out Great writing xoxo
