This is beautiful Paul, love the intense details of the lines & scratches. Poor little Dog looks so sad
Paul Compton replied
Thankyou pinkyjain. I began this picture by just cross-hatching endlessly and the dog emerged all by itself. It was a really special experience.
Lyuda
LOL!! And that’s what happens most of the time! They do it all by themselves ;)
Fantastic drawing Paul!! I do like it a lot!
Becc Orszag
yes incredible, how big is this by the way, i can only imagine the wrist cramps this caused.
ainhoaaparicio
Reminds me of Maurice Sendak’s crosshatching. Beautiful.
Monica Rutherford
There is something magical about this drawing and the other one I’ve seen like it. It’s as if they are their own type of creature living in the dark of the ink. The exhibition you mention, a chance to see the originals, would be something not to miss. Extraordinary work.

the black dog has long since become the symbol of depression and melancholy, and you’ve captured the beast in truth (or allegorical truth) here. well done. i’m not a stranger to the dog showing up at my own door unannounced so can relate to his sudden, unexpected emergence in your cross-hatching. churchill wasn’t alone. have you heard nick drake’s song ‘black-eyed dog?’ haunting. beautiful. sad. like this picture. thank you.
Firedrake
Wonderful. I love his sad eyes and droopy face.
Damian
Gorgeous work, love the way you’ve done this!
Garth Horsfield
Way unique drawing style… the crosshatching is a bit reminiscent of Maurice Sendak as mentioned, but I’ve never seen drawings quite the same… Uniqueness is fabulous, keep it up.
Natalie Foss
Oh, this is precious… The cross-hatching is truly beautifully done.
Haunting piece.
Michael Kienhuis
Looks like a Whippet! I have two and they can look like this! They are fantastic. This is beautiful
Paul Compton replied
A friend of a friend has a t-shirt with a picture of a Whippet in a Devo hat on it. The caption says: Whippet Good!
They’re beautiful animals. Cheers, thanks for the comment.
Belinda "Billy...
Fantastic!
Luckyvegetable
Paul, this is just so, so lovely. Nothing can look as tragically expressive as a dog’s face.
p.s. I want a tshirt like the one your friend has! haha =)
Tonia Composto
Love your work Paul
lurline
Very beautiful work, Paul Strange how the ‘Black Dog’ can appear – uncalled- for a lot of people.
Your work is superb! :):)
Persimmon
I like your sad doggy. Do you know Pamela Allen’s Black Dog? Read it and cry
Paul Compton replied
Thank you Persimmon. I don’t know it but I will endeavor to find a copy – sounds like something I would enjoy. Cheers.
Zoe Sadokierski
As a fellow Edward Gorey fan, I love this.
Johdie Fairwea...
I really like this, and all your work. It is quite haunting. I like the highlights around the ear and eye. Such a sad character but a great piece.
macen
love this!
The InnerNorth...
great work as it centres around the eye and its weighted expression
with a hint of
Remedios Varo thrown in
Paul Compton replied
Such a great comment. I love Remedios Varo! So many great works (Vegetarian Vampires and The Lovers spring to mind). Thank you so much!
kimbaross
Ah, the cursed black dog of depression that Winston described, excellent!
ladybirdworks
what a great image, evokes a definite sympathy for the black dog. Its like he was left out all day and a storm came and there’s no shelter..poor guy..
Herkissable
so clever….so sad!!
Juilee Pryor
hey paul this is wonderful …. really haunting drawing somehow….. great work
Mui-Ling Teh
Great drawing; love the hatchwork and the adorable little eye.
Jaextra
This is an amazing drawing. I really admire your patience for such detailed work. I particularly love the interaction between the background and the dog itself, the lines just disperse outward from the dog.
Paul Compton replied
Thank you for taking the time to comment, I really appreciate it. Look forward to seeing more of your work Jaextra.
Darren James
your work reproduces here really well, cant wait to see some in real life some day, there are levels to explore. hope you are doing well with it
Catherine Crim...
amazing….love the lines….. musta took a lifetime to do though..
Paul Compton replied
Thank you again Catherine. No, not a lifetime. I’m working on some at the moment that are cross-hatched to the extreme. I’ll be putting one of these up on my page called in the next two weeks – stay tuned : )
kirrily
This is gorgeous and the technique and the mood of the image remind me vaguely of a children’s book called The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek. Great work!
Paul Compton replied
Oh! Thank you so much kirrily. Yes, I remember and love The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek. Those illustrations were completely wonderful and unique. So kind of you to comment and favourite this. Thank you.
Tania Donald
god, paul, this is sensational! what a fantastic image. I really appreciate your dark vision. i was just looking at your dream dinner party list – i think we were separated at birth! i would also add H P Lovecraft….i’m addicted to his particular brand of cosmic horror…
t : )
Paul Compton replied
Thank you so much for taking the time to look through my work and for the wonderful comment Tania. Separated at birth eh? Well I hope you enjoy the dinner party guest links on my page then : ) H P Lovecraft was a one of a kind storyteller. So many writers have tried to emulate him but no-one quite captures his uniquely warped and wonderful style. Good choice. Best wishes to you.
Marion Chapman
oh, so sad, he is. wonderful drawing.
Paul Compton replied
Thank you so much Marion. Best wishes to you : )
Sebastiaan Koenen
Nice approach Paul! Things that are formed during the creative process might contain the strongest power, as with this piece also.
Paul Compton replied
Thanks so much Sebastiaan. I agree with that because I feel an unusually strong connection with this particluar drawing that came to life unexpectedly.
