Paul, this is the kind of thing I love. No one ever gets all the parts just right like I see them in my head… this is how my mind sees. It makes me feel a giddy longing somehow… it’s impossible to really describe. But yes, I love this. Very cool indeed.

Paul, I love this. It makes me want to get back into bed with a cup of tea and a book! Thank you for introducing me to this group.

  • Andy Mercer

    Andy Mercer

I also like this one.. the book is full of words and meaning and mental pictures but none of this is visible.. its a very simple picture that is brim full of a million possibilities. Every person who views it instantly has a book they know and a story they recall.

Is the book a cheap trashy novel, or a horror story.. a love story ? Or is the book a metaphor for your life.. you’re obviously quite a good way into it.. and the viewer is allowed to see the cover but none of the detail. My guess is you are a starving artist.. because you obviously can’t you afford clean paper ;)

  • Paul Compton replied

Thank you for the acute observations Andy. I do have some clean paper around here somewhere…

  • SoxyFleming

    SoxyFleming

what I want to know, Paul, is why someone isn’t paying you to draw pictures all day long. Mind you, you’d want to be drawing the sort of pictures you want to draw! And don’t worry about what that Andy Mercer says about clean paper…he has spaghetti and tomato sauce on all of his!

I think you have a real talent for isolating these seemingly “normal” objects and giving them a spooky special life of their own….like you could turn any everyday object into the subject of an oh so exciting mystery story. Hope you are writing the stories too!

  • Mui-Ling Teh

    Mui-Ling Teh

Love the detail of the torn and wrinkled pages, and the fact it’s turned down as though abandoned and just left there to wear away and get buried (until you unearthed it). Love the media you’ve selected as well; both the image and the paper is very antique.

  • F. Magdalene Austin

Is it me or is there an angelic white figure at the top of the book to the right?

Wicked that you’ve read a hundred times :)) My copy has been read by my wife and I and is now out on loan to someone.

  • Paul Compton replied

Great! I’ve only read it 99 times. I’m going to see the musical in three weeks so I’m pretty excited and don’t know what to expect – adaptations are never as good as the originals. This drawing was buried and unearthed as was the subject. Glad you like this one Dave : )

this is a simple image that is so thought provoking, im really drawn to it, i love it, love the way the book is discarded, full of words but we dont know by whom the book is discarded by or what the book is, there is so much meaning in this, beautful work, and the staining on the paper is a very atmospheric touch. Excellent piece of art Paul !
