Oz The Great and Terrible

Paul Compton

Oz The Great and Terrible

Ink, tea, watercolour and pencil on paper.
Drawing I did whilst reading Wicked by Gregory Maguire.
When the Wizard of Oz first appears he is really a strange visual paradox – grand and terrifying but also ridiculously phony and, frankly, a little tacky.

Oz The Great and Terrible belongs to the following groups:

I’m glad you used tea … coffee would have been far too scarey :) Can I say you are a really good painter, or has someone already told you? :))

  • Paul Compton replied

Actually no, I’ve always been more of a drawer than a painter so thank you very much for the compliment – I’m blushing sheepishly. Nice shirt in your profile pic by the way.

  • Mathew Reed

I’m really enjoying this drawing and the previous one of the goat, they sort of reminds me of the old grotesque etchings by Goya which I absolutely adore. And I really enjoy the companionship of the works to a piece of literature. Not a book I have read myself, but I appreciate it all the same.

Is there a quote you could post up in the description that shows a little bit of what inspired this work? Are you allowed to do that here though… Mmm… I’m not too sure if that might breach copyright or not.

  • Paul Compton replied

Hey Mathew. Technically I need to ask permission of the publisher but I may be able to do it if I quote the author, title, publisher and page number. I don’t know if I’m willing to toy with the copyright gods just yet – I might take it up with the Red Bubble gods. (The description that this picture is made of is on page 221 of the book.) Thank you for commenting.

the compositional hierarchy, use of colour and symbolism gives a real sense of a prestigious charleton figure-head – yet again – an amazingly metaphorical, well-rendered pictorial depiction

  • Paul Compton replied

Hee hee, thank you so much Arletta. (Which parts annoyed you?)

  • GiggleSnorts

    GiggleSnorts

    Awesome work. Well Done.

  • Arletta

    Arletta

Uhm .. osme of the sentiments and propagandast qualities annoyed me; that, and, hm.. how do I say this? I much prefer the ways of Alfred Hitchcock to whomever it is that makes the ‘Saw’ movies. A good writer doesn’t need to give a detailed account of every last thrust of puppet sex to get the idea across that it was both crude and fascinating, anymore than a good comedian need resort to vulgarity just to get a laugh. They still do, but they don’t need to, and, to me, that’s a lowering of an art form. I don’t even remember the author’s name, but whomever they were, they were obviously talented. The story was very well written, but it could have been even more so if it didn’t fall into bouts of bad porn. The rest of the book, I could and would read to anyone.

  • Paul Compton replied

I think the bad porn parts were there for a little shock value in order to strongly affirm: “this is not the Oz you once knew from the children’s book”. I agree with you, those parts could have been handled more deftly. In terms of film entertainment I would like to see a return to the subtle insinuated menace mastered by Alfred Hitchcock and Jacques Tourner. Much more effective than out-and-out gore etc. Thanks for the comments Arletta.

  • Arletta

    Arletta

Well, that’s my point, yes. Shock value wasn’t needed, because anyone in their right mind (supposing people in heir right mind read books about Oz) would know it’s a grittier, more real, different sort of Oz.

Although, really, it isn’t. It is told from a different viewpoint, as much of history is anyway. IE: The grand and glorious George Washington vanquishing the oppressive English bastards versus the traitorous scum George Washington rebelling against the Crown. A rather large elephant, pissing on rocks and posing as a human, the way the birth of the Wicked Witch of the West came about, an assassinated goat, etc. was more than shocking enough, methinks. Wow! That makes me want to read the story all over again, just thinking about all that. lol

Totally agree about the films. But, then, I would also find ‘The Piano’ infinitely sexier than, say, ‘Debbie Does Dallas’ and yet many would not concur.

    Goodnight, interesting person!

I dont think that they could have ‘used your mate’ as the Wizard of Oz in the cuddly film version :o) They had to go for white haired man and his ‘scary voice’ on the microphone. I love it when artists are inspired by a movie or book theme and take on their own version of it. Its like ones imagination when one reads a book and imagines what the characters look like and what their office looks like and so forth. The colour GREEN brings me back to the Oz movie – somehow I
remember the GREEN curtain opening with Oz moving all the switches :o)
The flurorescent tubes of Oz are replaced with more gothic candles burning.
Gothic and cool at the same time, Regards, Paul (gottheshot)
