Oz The Great and Terrible

Oz The Great and Terrible

Ink, tea, watercolour and pencil on paper.
Drawing I did whilst reading Wicked by Gregory Maguire.
When the Wizard of Oz first appears he is really a strange visual paradox – grand and terrifying but also ridiculously phony and, frankly, a little tacky.

Oz The Great and Terrible belongs to the following groups:

The Drawing Board

I’m glad you used tea … coffee would have been far too scarey :) Can I say you are a really good painter, or has someone already told you? :))

  • Paul Compton

Paul Compton in reply to BLYTHART’s comment, 3 months ago

Actually no, I’ve always been more of a drawer than a painter so thank you very much for the compliment – I’m blushing sheepishly. Nice shirt in your profile pic by the way.

I’m really enjoying this drawing and the previous one of the goat, they sort of reminds me of the old grotesque etchings by Goya which I absolutely adore. And I really enjoy the companionship of the works to a piece of literature. Not a book I have read myself, but I appreciate it all the same.

Is there a quote you could post up in the description that shows a little bit of what inspired this work? Are you allowed to do that here though… Mmm… I’m not too sure if that might breach copyright or not.

  • Paul Compton

Paul Compton in reply to Mathew Reed’s comment, 3 months ago

Hey Mathew. Technically I need to ask permission of the publisher but I may be able to do it if I quote the author, title, publisher and page number. I don’t know if I’m willing to toy with the copyright gods just yet – I might take it up with the Red Bubble gods. (The description that this picture is made of is on page 221 of the book.) Thank you for commenting.

the compositional hierarchy, use of colour and symbolism gives a real sense of a prestigious charleton figure-head – yet again – an amazingly metaphorical, well-rendered pictorial depiction
