Never Cry
Ink and tea drawing of Elphaba (the Wicked Witch of the West) I did after reading Gregory Maguire’s splendid book Wicked.
Elphaba is a truly amazing character. An Atheistic hero, an animal/Animal rights activist, a non-conformist and an intellectual. Elphaba remains a strong woman throughout her whole life – she has to, in a way, because she can’t cry. Tears literally burn her.

Amazing portrait and it captures her not being able to cry with such an intense passion! I truly think Elphaba is one of the great characters of modern literature!!! I first read the book when it first came out. I was on study abroad in London and sat in Hyde Park and read it in a few hours. It was a perfect day! This bring me back….

Peace Paul, I really love this series, and all of the background information you’ve included. I saw Wicked on stage, but I’ve never read the book. I think I will now. Elphaba seems totally fascinating, as is your art that is based on her. peace…

Love this – the pinched expression, the bottled-up pain and outer strength. Stunning

What a sad portrait? But how do you stop from crying?
Paul Compton in reply to Cathie Brooker’s comment, about 1 month ago
I don’t know Cathie. Just cry until you’re all cried out I guess. Thank you for commenting : )

Great work, and a great description of her life. Such a fantastic character.
Paul Compton in reply to Damian’s comment, 17 days ago
Thank you Damian. She is a brilliant character. The part of the book when Elphaba convinces herself in vain that Fiyero is coming back to her disguised as the scarecrow really broke my heart. I did this picture after just reading that section of the book.

Elphaba Thropp, Wicked Witch of the West , an amazing character Paul!!
Did you know : In the original L. Frank Baum book, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, the Witch is unnamed and we know little about her life. Elphaba is modeled after the witch as she is shown in the 1939 classic movie The Wizard of Oz: Green-skinned, clad entirely in black, and wearing a tall peaked hat. Maguire formulated the name out of L. Frank Baum’s name. L. Frank Baum became El-pha-ba. In both adaptations, Elphaba is also called by several nicknames including Elphie, Fabala, Sister (Saint) Aelphaba, and Fae.
A stunning tribute to this wonderful witch Paul…BRAVO…

Hee hee, yes I did know these (I’m a research junky you see) but am so thankful for this comment because now other people can read it and find out some terrific info. Did you know that in the original Wizard of Oz the witch only has one eye. She is a wonderful witch and thank you for the compliment Carol. xo

Yes Paul..I did know this snippet of info aswell…love it…”Research Junkie”...never quite thought of myself as one, but Yes, I am one too….tend to buy a good book, then the need to research the author, then the need to research some finer detail within the book…the need goes on and on…I always thought of it as never ending curiosity…lol…but then, that killed the cat…so I’ll now refer to myself as a “Research Junkie””...lol…thanks for brightening my day Paul….xo
