Elphaba & Young Chistery

Elphaba & Young Chistery

Ink, watercolour and pencil drawing on paper.
Illustration I did whilst reading the book Wicked by Gregory Maguire.
Chistery is Elphaba’s beloved monkey whom she later sews wings onto. I really don’t like this drawing but I thinks it’s the closest I got to visualizing how sweet and innocent Chistery is in the book.

Ink and watercolour is what I am currently “into” so I really appreciate this. There is a Redbubble group for illustrators and I think you should be in it. You have done an excellent job of painting the fluffiness of this little fellow. I don’t know if you intend to become an illustrator, but if you do, then I’d say you have a bright future ahead of you Paul.

wow there’s alot of ink and watercolor work going around lately, been doing that myself. anyways I love what you did here. it’s a great book (my favorite by him, some I don’t like much). I especially like the monkey. Elphaba was so misunderstood and the book really makes you think about how people judge each other and how some are wrongly persecuted.

you have done Elphaba proud Paul, she is beautiful, and little Chistery is delightful, such a darling face, such sweetness in this excellent painting. These all have been a pleasure to see and read, true treasures, you have a wonderful gift Paul, hope your dream comes true where you can draw all day & get paid for it

  • Paul Compton replied

Thank you so much pinkyjain. I’m kind of hoping that you do a drawing of Chistery – I think you would be the perfect person to capture his spirit. xo

i actually haven’t gotten that far in the book yet, i’m not a slow reader, just trying to find time in a day to do everything (and RB just went off the air here for near 30 minutes, so i actually got some drawing done, another commissioned Dog portrait with 3 Dogs in this one), but i will certainly be glad to consider when i get to that part, would be an honor to such a wonderful book

even though your images appear dark there is still a childlike innocence about them, i think its a fascinating aspect.

I echo Blyth’s comments.. you should do some research on getting into book illustration.. because you are very good.

And you do colour as well ;)

listening to moonage daydream while going through your folio. by the way, with such guest list this is gonna be one hot dinner party. but can it be followed by an exhibition of your work before the live music and dancing till dawn with ziggy stardust?

  • Paul Compton replied

Oh oh yes yes. That sounds great. There will also be a costume chest on hand so we can dress up like complete kooks and dance like crazy – inspired by The Cure’s Friday I’m In Love video. Thanks for commenting RSart. Best wishes : )

I like that you have included her pointy chin as in the book. The cover of my copy shows a rather rounded chin.

  • Paul Compton replied

Thank you Dave. The pointy chin is a necessity to her character I think. Strong, well-defined. I’m so glad you are reading the book Dave : )
