Death of a salesman

Paul Vanzella

Death of a salesman

Harking back to the 30’s, 40’s, and 50’s salesman often had to travel across the country for months at a time… such disconnected souls.

Maybe he is free and just didn’t want to sell anymore.
However, we are all salesmen in one way or another.

I think his car broke down. He started to try to walk out of the desert. He ran out of water. The temperature was 40 degrees. He peeled of all his clothes in his delirium. The he came across a rancid pool of water, drank from it and died an incredibly painful, lonely death. This shot is the Forensic photo taken at the scene. His eyes had been picked out by crows. Strangley though, when they uploaded the images at the police station, there was this weird anomoly on the image. They had no explanation for it.

P.S Glad a scorpion didn’t bite you on the bum….........Good looking dead guy….............Amazing backdrop…......love it to bits….......clever you.

Salesman surrounded by the rubbish and pollution we used and he sold. His body will return to the soil the chattels of his and our lives usually don’t….............this is a powerful image with a strong message for me, thanks Paul.

the movie I mentioned is NOT called wings of an angel…. so sorry it’s called Wings of Desire and is one of the best movies ever made ever…. angel falls in love with a circus trapeze artist and chooses to fall to earth…... nick caves in it and also columbo…... lots of mad shots of anges with long hair in ponytails wearing long black coats hanging around in librarys….. just divine….. pun fully intended….:)

Makes me think of words once written by the legendary writer and alcoholic Malcolm Lowry, author of ‘Under the Volcano’, the most alcohol drenched novel ever written. He once wrote: ‘If death can fly just for the joy of flying, what might not life do for the joy of dying’. (I am not absolutely sure I have the quotation completely right.) The loneliness in this picture gives me the shivers, like good art should. The fact you mirrored the salesman makes me think there are two sides to his death. At first side the man looks like someone who threw himself away. At second glance it might be about a process of spiritual death, in which a part of us dies, because we don’t want that part of ourselves anymore. And because we want to be reborn in a life that is closer to our heart. His pose makes me think of liberation of a burden. And his nudeness makes me think he threw off his masquerades and found back his innocence. I am very fascinated by this image. You use such a clear language to you speak about the deep depths of human consciousness.

For me that picture represent people who died forgotten like pigs, when they lost there family roots. If you do not bother during your life time to care about anyone: wife, parents, your children it is what your death will look like. I have feelings his life was a junk, the same as rubbish next to him. Artistically picture is done with mastery…. well done Paul

Great work as always Paul, it’s the symbolism of the fence that does it for me as it suggests separation and isolation. His (your?) position is also very powerful, maybe he has been crucified by life itself. Tonal work is stunning!!...D.

You are right Paul – we are all selling something, hopefully not our souls. You look totally at peace and free. You’ve surrendered and cast off all in the hope of freeing your spirit which can get bogged down with the daily grind of making a living. Superb placement in the frame and the tonal work is beautiful.

There is a story in every one, and they are so ambiguous and full of clues that one can come up with almost anything that fits!! Well done, you have made me think.. again! why am i thinking of Walter Matthau? an uncompromisingly lonesome piece of work – kind of makes you feel that just around the corner of any fantastic place is a scrap of land where a body can lay for days unnoticed, save that is for the local beasties.

True that… Great description to accompany a highly, emotive moment… I sure hope that salesman didn’t sell off his own soul.
