Listening to desolation
Travelling through Arizona I noticed so much desolation, abandoned structures, disconnected souls… which prompted me to stop and listen, I’m fascinated with connecting sound to the visual medium.
How do you visually capture the sound
of desolation…this is my attempt….
The transparency of the girl shows a dissociativeness with the landscape.
Is she there only in spirit? Not only until one is heard completely do they connect totally with their environment.

Paul,
You connected me back to my early childhood, living in Phoenix Arizona.
Your images wrapped in thoughts . . . are a journey, inviting us to explore the vast landscape of your imagination and soul. When you share in this way, you raise the universal consciousness and serve as a beautifully connecting thread we can each reach for – in our own unique way.
The sound of desolation . . . you’ve visually captured it.

Great idea. You really show me the beauty of desolation. Often, when I see images of this kind of lonely landscapes, it makes me feel sad. Your image doesn’t. Maybe because you bathed the landscape in the golden light of love for this desolated dimension of life on Planet Earth. I agree sounds are an essential element if you thoroughly want to experience what a landscape or surrounding means to you. That is why I love to hike. I want to hear every insect or barking dog from afar. If I look at a landscape from behind the glass of a car I am only a spectator. If I step into the landscape and listen to its story I am becoming part of it. It even goes further: when I step into it I start to influence what is happening there. I love your visual experiments. They touch such elementary dimension of life.

Such a great shot! I like the aged affect to the photo adds an interesting quality to it. It looks dusty in the photo which so Arizona I like it. Where in Arizona was this taken? I’m from Tucson, AZ…Yeah it’s very desolate in some parts of Arizona…Did you happen to visit Tombstone, AZ? A very old western town…

i’ve been meaning to comment on this piece but couldn’t find the right words. until now.
here’s my two cents: what this image portrays to me is the familiarity and comforts we are accustomed to. every so often we have to make transitions, to get out of our comfort zones. we need to get into a pioneering spirit and find connection in disconnection, peace in war, love in brokenness and abadonment. it may not be familiar or comfortable but it sure is rewarding.
Jennifer Woodward
Great work Paul!! wondefully composed – great textures. Awesome!!
Jacq Wilson
You know, desolation doesn’t happen overnight….........there was once life here, it is a slow disintegration, so slow that nobody notices the leaving of its heart and soul until it is gone.
Wonderful image.
