Transfixed
This image is inspired by the photography of Bill Henson and the taste for darkness, texture and creating a subliminal energy. The focus of the sprawling arms as they cut diagonals through the image to the dark silvery tones help create the ambiguous nature of the image – is it uplifting or helplessness. You decide.

I find it very Easter crucifixion like – both dark and uplifting!
kookylane
wooow, must say, it looks quite different from your usual subjects, but man, this would work so well with the theme unleashed. I love it!

This takes me on a journey.

This is intense, such a removal from your other work but no less outstanding. The cyan tones are chilling.
meanderthal
very dream like….the blues and browns work well against each other and serve to intensify the emotional content in the image…..nice departure from your other stuff too…

Such an emotional looking piece, looks like he is gasping and hanging on with such conviction. I love the silver, blue tones to this and the textures of the walls, all makes a fabulous backdrop. Very powerful indeed:)

Very Bill Henson – Did you see his retrospective a few years ago at the NGV ? It was heaven! This is a great take on his style.
Paul Vanzella
wow – thanks Lisadee – that means alot to me… definitely inspired by him.. love his darkness!
Nando MacHado
If it wasn’t for the hairy chest, it reminds me a lot of Caravaggio’s impossible light sources. Oh, that’s a compliment, by the way. :)
jdannaoui
Christ-like in its appearance…. Well done.
Mel Brackstone
Yes indeed, very Bill Henson. I like the fact you leave your hands out of this view, so we have to guess whether your wrists or hands are being held captive or not. There’s the recurring theme with your “6.40am to Rome” in the position of your arms….always food for thought, your work, thank you, Paul!

stumbled over this.. BLoody Fantastic!!

I love the geometric lines that the bricks and the wires make behind the figure.
It contrasts beautifully with the position of the model.

Such an awesome image, love the subtle blue tones and the whole image is very reminiscent of a religious experience combined with Saw, the complete antithesis of each other

it’s …
surrender.
to both helplessness and the possibility of uplifting.
(that’s so sitting on the fence i know but it’s what i see)
Anki Hoglund
What a fantastic image, one of the best I have seen.
Christopher Bi...
wow!
mstrace
what I find so evocative is the hands being hidden, so my imagination takes this image where I want it to go – which is surrender. And oooh, in a perfect world – with such a masculine form as this – those wrists are restrained so his surrender is at the mercy of the imaginary someone you can’t see in the image.
The light on the musculature is in all the right places and my eye keeps focusing on the hair on the chest…which I stared at soooo long I started to see the shape of a tree, branching and blossoming upward.
I admit, I had lascivious thoughts. That, fair warning, is where my mind tends to go.
Bravo…love this one!

wow – what a remarkable comment – so love what you got out of it mstrace… you certainly know how to reach a guy… What an incredibel appraisal… Thank you!
Clare McClelland
The mood and set of this shot really does it for me…before I read the last comment, I was feeling very similarly and the first thing I noticed was the tree on your chest …
this a total MAN shot – the posture is very magnetic .. powerful and vulnerable, raw masculinity
Paul Vanzella
replied
thank you Clare – love what you have got out of this… and yes, the tree is even more apparent now that you bring it to light… love your insight!

Paul, I gotta say I keep getting drawn back to your photos where you so unabashedly share your body with the lens (including those of Mel Brackstone)
-I admire the openness and honesty (and the jealous cynic in me says, ‘yeah, how hard would it be with a body that fit and masculine?’ and the artist in me just admires). I have not seen any facial portrait of you, however, and I wonder if there’s a paradox going on-whereas some are free with their face and its expressive nature, I’ve seen you here more free with everything BUT your face. Leaves me wondering how one of those b/w, dof, high-contrasty portraits of you would look . . . As deep as your comments and work are, I’d love to see how it’s all expressed in your face!Paul Vanzella
LOL – here I am with the talented Mel Brackstone:
http://www.redbubble.com/people/paul/journal/1148547-mel-brackstone-visits-melbourne
and, she has been trying to persuade me with such portrait you described above…
The thing is, i don’t consider myself an oil painting in body or face… but, for some reason, use my body to express and art piece, sometimes cause I’m the only person available as most of my images can use the female or male body as the main subject…
Also, I like your statement on using the body as paradox – had this discussion with the talented Jo O’Brien too… i guess when you are naked flesh and body you are presented your whole self with nothing to hide… portraits with clothes or faces can mask a facade… also I think the body is more expressive…. Thanks for your kind words… and I believe Mel will be getting her face portrait soon (she is persistent)....
