Food Omission Therapy 101
Back in the late 50’s Dr Willheim Vän Flugelhorn of the Flugelhorn Universität Berlin tried a radical new therapy to help young women lose weight. F.O.T. (Food Omission Therapy) not FOOD he bellowed from the top of his lungs. He thought by gagging their mouths and tying their hands it would prevent them from indulging… Safe to say Dr Flugelhorn was admitted to the local sanitarium just two doors down from his laboratory…. and thank goodness for that… Now, this story is no different from the fad diets that plague our magazines and advertising mediums. Enough already!
Model: Sarah Lea Cheesecake
Styling: Jo O’Brien
Assistant: James Price

This is a cool image Paul. I don’t know precisely why, I think it’s the colors and the pose, but this reminds me of the work of my great idol, the Czech photographer Jan Saudek. Coming from me that’s about the biggest compliment I can give. ;)
Anette Tyler
Fantastic work and concept. Great light and colors.
Kurt Tutschek

omg…HOT!!!!!!!
Lisa Jewell
Only issue I have is that the model in question is a very beautiful healthy weight and not in need of losing any…...of course if she is put to the runway waif boyish test, perhaps she’d not hold up, but put against the average woman, she’d be most women’s dream…
So I’m not convinced at all….
jumpy
mmmm burgers, great shot as always Paul :P

Gerijuliaj
I am naturally skinny’ and sometimes I get tired of people saying ‘you should eat more’....I was a model back in the 80s and am still the same weight…I love food and always eat healthily but am destined for better or worse to be ‘skinny’. I don’t agree with fad diets or trying to be a size that is unhealthy….by the way Paul it’s a great photo!
Martin Derksema
I think this is such an important statement and I am so happy you pull the attention towards this subject. I know from close experiences that these ridiculous ideas about how women should look do so much mental damage to a lot of women all over the world. It can ruin their life. It are hurtful ideas, based on a very one-sided and biased image of female shapes. The sad thing is it are not only the advertising and fashion world that keep this alive, even mothers torture their daughters with the idea of being too fat. You depicted the madness of this theme so strong and effective. And your picture also shows there is an element of violence and repression in these ideas. Initiatives like yours are so important. In this context I also feel so much respect for the “Dove campaign for Real Beauty”.
Daniela Reynos...
Wow great shot, styling is Amazing!!!!!
Daniel Rayfield
Awesome work guys !! Not she needs to diet though, An amazing story and just curious how long did he leave them gagged? looks like you all had alot of fun credits to jo for styling!!! very well done all of you!!! Who had the fun of doodling on the blackboard? anyways overall FANTASTIC Though this piece would not be without PVZ ;)
sweetscent62
I’d like to see this in every womens magazine around the world… We are meant to eat… we are meant to have fat stores on our bodies for child bearing and feeding…and to be a lovely soft cushion to hold our loved ones close to our breast. French women have the right idea… eat what you want… dance…drink wine.. and be pampered.. no guilt no remorse.. sounds like heaven : ) A very powerful message Paul! and an awesome photograph! Wendy
Ena Lü
great work Paul!!!! was FOT for real or are an excellent fabrication to deliver a point?
this would work very well alongside my piece Celebrity Spoon, in fact would be great
as a theme on the homepage ,,,,,,,, I Love what everyone says here, but also we forget
that diversity in body shape and size exists because we have a huge diversity in our own preferences of what is attractive :)
Nando MacHado
On the statement: Vent away Paul – you’re so right!

Great image…as always with your work. I love the anatomy drawings behind the model. Unfortunately, I’d probably just gnaw through the gag…. seriously though, I do agree with your message. Diet books/articles and most of those self help/ self diagnose psychosis ones as well, ought to all be banned. All are the same recycled mumbo-jumbo. I heard an author on the TV news yesterday morning that compared people’s deep seated phobias and insecurities to large beachballs but did she offer any way to deflate them?....of course not. Just the same old, same old. So, after that lengthy comment…sorry….I just wanted to say that I applaud you for bringing this all to the forefront with this amazing image. Great work!
Robyn Lakeman
Fantastic image Paul, really thought provoking. Agree totally with your message. It’s so much worse for women today than it was back in the 60s and 70s where there was no digital manipulation in the glossies. There’s always that image to live up to these days, even for the guys.
Ian Robertson
great image and treatment as everyone said..but I fail to see the humour as is in Humour captured group..or was this added by default?
I do look forward to some humorous images but they seem thin on the ground.
Anyway great image.
Cliff Vestergaard

hey paul – love the image – the colours – the style and most importantly the crucial message that women are most beautiful at their natural best!
...yes Doctor DOESN’T always know best!!!

Without the mythology behind the image, I initially thought it was a commentary on the trappings of our fast-food culture. Fantastic image/message either way. I keep coming back for just one more look.

shayne2011
another thinly veiled excuse to objectifying women and indulge some sicko sad sadist fantasy. it might give some of the old geezers here a hard on, it simply repulses me.
Jo O'Brien
What I like about this is that rather than just taking a stunning looking women and making her look all sexy and vulnerable. You’ve taken a stunning looking woman, placed her in the context of a rather serious and sombre health issue and used the ‘sexy vulnerable’ part to make people pay attention. Sure, first we go “look boobs!” but that is just the first step. You are quick to take our hand and walk us into the deeper meaning. A perfect example of sex sells but for once it’s selling us a wake up call, a health alert, a finger to our pulse. I’m sold.

I tried to comment on this earlier, but my words were gobbled up and alas, disappeared! Anyway, this is brilliant, Paul. I love how you’ve captured Sarah’s pained expression. The backdrop works perfectly – love the sketchy drawings of the human anatomy. The styling is great, and gives the piece a sexy feel. It’s fantastic that you’re sending out the right positive messages here regarding body image… it’s such a battle these days, so it’s refreshing to see this sort of exposure.
Thomas Dodd
Now that’s what a REAL sexy woman looks like. Great image – works on so many levels…. Congrats!

This must rank as one of your best, the way the subtle tones and colours compliment and contrast with one another is sublime. The lighting is flawless and her pose and expression strike a fine balance considering the subject matter and the issues that this seeks to address…....Nice one Paul!

Wow Paul, what a fabulous way to show us all how stupid fad diets can be!!! Sara Lea is certainly the perfect model for proving how beautiful curves are in a woman!!!

Serendipity Paul. People will glance at this image and see a beautiful curvaceous woman and like what they see… then they will read your words and discover something else entirely wonderful. This is respect for the female form on every level that is important. F.O.T? Bullshit… I prefer F.Y.M.

I know what I must buy next as a photography accessory: A black shag pile. And a white one. That’s how you get the best-looking models, right Paul? Hmmm, maybe a red one too…
Danielle Prowse
This should be an advertisment for anorexia nervosa, peoples body images these days is out of control! I did a workshop with the great hollywood photograper Douglas Kirkland a couple of years ago, when he was questioned about the whole body image issue he said something along the lines of “it is us as photographers that are mainly causing the body issues that people have these days, we erase, slim and creat perfection, we photographers cannot blame the designers, i would never hire and assistant who wasnot a genuis with photoshop!” I actually thought about whats he said and i didnt agree with him, but hes such a legend i didnt want to say anything….the really ironic thing is hes most famous for shooting Marilyn Monroe!!!

F*ing terrible. I’m constantly outraged by the exploitation-for-profit (or even exploitation not for profit in fact) that tells people (men as well as women in my view) that they’re not good enough, makes them insecure and urges them to look like a fake “ideal” that will never exist. You can’t airbrush a person walking down the street, and if you could (some idiot is probably working on it) you wouldn’t want to.
Give me real people any day.
Cheers,
Erland.

Rare is the man who appreciates women as is, without being caught up in bullshit from media. God Bless you, Paul, for your vision.

I usually shy away from such type of photography because sex doesn’t really sell with me. While this could have propably also been said without this photograph? To me also demonstrates the fantasies and desires that hides behind such extreme mesures to look good and desirable. As for me, I used to suffer anorexia because I didn’t want to get fat. But I have rejected the chase of abusing myself. For what anyway?
I am what you would consider fat and I wouldn’t say happy with it. No one in the right mind likes being fat. But what ever we do to our body? It will pay us back in later years. It pays to be sensible and to be modest and look after our bodies and treat it with respect because no one else will. There is so much in that work that stands out wich represent all the worldly fleshly cravings and desire that people are hunting for and yet we all grow old and everything vanishes, except the image that you have created and imortalised :-))
Thank you Paul for giving me so much stimulating though provokind morning.

I didn’t even read the reasoning beside the work, it was too commanding to admire her image instead! Some would say, whatever the reason, and you could use the image to get people to agree upon something like a charity…

Methinks Flugelhorn had issues with women’s appearance more than they did themselves and although it might sound extreme to us now there are probably just as many dangerous and unhealthy fads these days. Good work Paul and a message that still needs giving.

Don’t know whether to laugh or cry with this one Paul. It’s wonderful work alright, and what a crazy Doc he was…I wonder if he had any male patients? It’s funny to think that old medical texts classically referred to patients in the feminine gender, and now that we’re getting more women enrolling to be doctors than men, one wonders how that might impact on clinical approaches..you got me thinkin’ with this amazing shot Paul.
