FUTURE uriNATION

Paul Vanzella

FUTURE uriNATION

This is an actual place 1 hour out of Brussels called The Atomium, (great name!) which is a replica of an atom magnified 165 billion times it stands 334.6 ft. high and was built for the 1958 World Expo… it consists of 9 spheres linked with these massive elevator shafts you can physically climb into… I was totally fascinated by the massive scale and although built in 1958, has this tremendous futuristic appeal… wonder if we will all be living in spherical metallic pods in the future… I know I want to!

  • Jodie Johnson

    Jodie Johnson

As usual I love your effects. The colour cast kind of adds to the feeling that if this was the future, the air may be thick and dirty – and of course inside the pod would be constantly pumping ultra clean, filtrated and probably chemically treated air! Lovely shot.

Is this guy really urinating? I love your take on this, avoiding the usual tourist shots… and that tacky temporary construction shack actually mimics the dreary interior decor which they could have done a way better job on than they did. They actually replaced the entire aluminum shell a couple of years back which consists of thousands of triangular shaped pieces. they were selling the original pieces for about $1.000 each depending on the size… and although I just ragged on the interior decor, I think of the monument with great nostalgia and regret not having paid the price and bought a piece of it. Paul, another great take!

  • Lachlan Kent

I love every single element of this image Paul… the enormous, shiny atom, the puff of smoke, the fella taking a leak… such brilliant juxtaposition to create a somewhat absurd piece of art.

  • Philip W Messenger

the atom is Fe (iron) if I’m not mistaken.
A few years ago there was a big discussion in taking this atomium down. It didn’t happen.
If fact they started renovating. I’m glad you liked it.

  • Birgitta

As much as I’m fascinated by this huge very cool sphere..
I’m even more fascinated by the “peeing stranger”....! (Is that you?!)
Are you a mad scientist? heheh…(looks like a lab coat) Bizarre..the kind
of photo that instantly makes you shake yourself because it’s alarming
and somewhat confusing yet you simply must get to the bottom of it
and cannot stop looking! In other words, compelling work. ;)

Great stuff, I originally thought it was just a montage work but the fact that it is a real place makes it all the more amazing. Again it has that subliminal aspect of something about to happen…other than the man peeing of course.

  • Michelle422

    Michelle422

I do love this. It seems to illustrate modern society perfectly. There is the image of the atom symbolising our pursuit of science as we try to explain the workings of our world instead of just appreciating what is there for us, the attention seeking of the young as they leave their tags, the industrial rubbish bin (oh, the rubbish we produce, shame on us), the lonely figure reminding us that loneliness exists in a city teeming with people, the worrying dark images of nature the dead trees (okay it is winter I guess), and that vent with the worrying steam and a stain of pollution, and, finally, the cold hard concrete barriers, terse signs and bitumen removing our nearness to the Earth. I do indeed love this.

1 hour out of Brussels? You had some traffic! If you drive one hour out of Brussels you are in France, Holland or at my place. In the last case: drop by for a beer next time!
Ehr, back to your image. Like your approach, very non touristy and with a fine dose of humor. It really does like a futuristic scene like you shot it. I can appreciate what you did with the colors. Excellent shot.

  • LauraHartley

    LauraHartley

I love this. It is so quirky. The atomic sphere looks like a massive robotic face. The fellow in the distance who could be urinating is a hilarious touch. The touches of red ground the composition and the surreality of this is just so odd. What mind sees this, I ask? What mind, indeed…!
