Agra Station

Paul Vanzella

Agra Station

Agra Station. The lights kept going out but the natural light proved quite atmospheric. A longish exposure captured the moment. I manged to take quite a few images in this moment of darkness and light – and was swamped by the people around me who were fascinated at the instant image on the back of my digital camera… God I love India!

What a fantastic description… It must be such an amazing experience to be in a place like that..

The guy on the left must have been telling one heck of a story! And you’ve captured it wonderfully!
    Well done..

God I love India, too. Such a unique place full of life and contrast.
Great image! I was stuck at Agra station for about 3 hours waiting for a train to Delhi … yep, made a whole lot of new friends!

I love the way they can squat like that for hours. What I’d give…...the colours are wonderful, Paul, so smooth, and the textures in their clothes stand out so well

  • Paul Vanzella

    Paul Vanzellafounder

Thanks for your great comments – yes, Mel I love the textures in their clothes, it was so awesome just wandering and choosing what to frame – like being on a movie set at your free will – and this is real life too!

  • Melinda Kerr

    Melinda Kerr

Fantastic Paul. I know the feeling. I had the same experience in Africa. That feeling that the whole world is one massive set and you can frame it a hundred times over and still get a great shot. Which by the way you have achieved yet again.

That is, without a doubt, a fabulous photograph. Well done.

Oh! This I like very much. I like the grain, the tones, the capture of a moment of simple conversation, perhaps in the cold; huddling and waiting for work to come their way.

A moment of quiet reflection in the chaotic abandon of an Indian train station.

Hey Paul… so much of your work has an erotic edge to it which is great …but this one is quite different…I can feel the humanity and almost smell the atmosphere…never been to India but I think you have really captured the essence of whatt it is about…people, friendship, and living in the moment…wicked photograph.

  • victor

    victor

Yeah ! Paul great shot, character, lighting,..... but ..ahh..don’t neglect the erotic stuff…..we gunna see some more, pretty soon.. maybe…..ha ?

softness, peace, tranquillity, warm colours, such a feeling of life passing quite “slowly”.
A particular atmosphere that I really love, and a special lighting indeed.
Never been to India, but I can understand a little.
    I’m captivated.

..can almost smell the spices.. wonderful rich colour…
“K, portrait”.. ta for commenting… it’s the beginning of a new series … the face is in fact a reflection in a sheet of tinted glass.. so there’s no photoshopping here except for tweaking levels..I rather do like baroque painting and its dramatic lighting..

A fine example of how image content transcends a lack of optimum sharpness. Very unusual lighting too. It’s almost like a studio set-up for an Indian TV sitcom or something. Perhaps it’s just my mind – I thought the sacks in the train were giant intestines at first! I’d love to go back there to do a photo series called ‘Agra Dogs’. (They were the mangiest I’d seen anywhere).

Wonderful Paul. Takes me back to Agra station in the early 80s! The station would not have changed a bit. Richard Neville wrote of India “India bestows on its travellers the gift of selective amnesia…they go back”! So true.

    Cheers

I went to India 6 years ago and it changed my life forever! The culture shock was intense but I felt at ease & extremely happy and comfortable very quickly. Just driving in the taxis feeling like you’re about to die is a life changing experience in itself – they drive like maniacs!!! I could’ve sat in the back of those taxis for days though and just watched the people and countryside out the window. To see people with nothing, happier than I think I’ve ever been was a huge lesson!
I was there during a Ganesh festival and it was truly wonderful. I adored the place. I was in the South… little less crowded… more country. God I wish I had my SLR then!!!

If you loved India then I bet you will love the book Shantaram if you haven’t read it already. You’ll probably die when you see the size of it but don’t be put off by it. It’s truly one of the best books I’ve ever read – twice!! It’s become an international bestseller. The author Greg lives in St Kilda, he’s truly an incredibly smart and amazing person. I can pretty much safely guarantee that you will find things to love about Shantaram… especially if you love India – It’s brilliant. So if you like to read.. give it a go.
    Pip :)

  • Paul Vanzellafounder replied

thanks so much Pip… yes – it IS ana amzing place… a total must see… you get so much out of the country… thank you..
