I love the massive surreal feel to this image. It is as if the fabric of the universe has been torn and this is a glimpse into a parallel world….or something. Lovin’ the drama:)
Janet Leadbeater, about 1 year ago
you live in another world… empty of people, but larger than life

So fess up and tell us Paul – How much treatment do these images get after they come out of the camera ? The look is so distinct.

Of course – I want to develop a style with these cityscapes… shadows and highlights are critical to me, and, of course the first capture is so important and has to evoke the energy and style in the first place. There are a few layers that build the image and pinpointed sections where you can work into the flatness or contrast of each element. The overall effect is for a slighlty painterly feel and an aesthetic snapshot of the time and place.
James Pierce, about 1 year ago
Do you remote or add many elements, or is it more careful contrast and saturation control ?

Usually I just enhance certain elements to make the image have more impact, maybe duplicate an element or change the colour saturation – I like to build the piece as an artist would and you come across all sorts of composition conundrums… With this image, I’ve gone way further and used some beautiful pencil pines I photographed in Hobart – I’m forever collecting industrial chimmneys, trees, signs etc… Also, the burn and dodge tool (as in a real photographic lab) plays a big part in rendering the final image.

GOSH! Cant get enough of this one – its on another level altogether… the light and mood you have created remind me of something out of the movie SinCity. It has a real cinematic feel to it, Very Dramatic… the sky is awesome… The vehicles are just enough to keep it grounded. Love it.

Your treatment makes the real seem somewhat un-real. It reminds me a lot of Jeffrey Smart – not only the locations but also the colours and lighting as well. Really interesting stuff.
Armon Rostami, about 1 year ago
Your work has a precision behind it which is more like a surgent capturing seperate worlds and bringing them into an urban context!

I guess you know this is a great image by all the comments but Im going to add my 2 cents anyway. You’ve really created a mood with the use of light, and so surreal.

Thanks Monalisa – yes, I simply use Photoshop, as a graphic designer I use it everyday in my work, however, it’s great to unleash it in a more creative way when working on my own artwork. Thanks again.

Love how the sky and trees glow/saturate in such a grey location, you have created an eye catching piece of work.
richiedean, about 1 year ago
More drama and atmosphere. Fantastic
Erica Corr, about 1 year ago
Yes, there are some Dali-esque elements to this, especially in the clouds. Which increases my attraction to this image. The trees seem heroic in their ability to rise above and survive the asphalt. Does it for me!
