This would have to be one of your best Paul…....

Fab composition + great treatment… it really brings the disaster home.
Walter Colvin
Terrible thing to happen, but an excellent photograph Paul. We had a large fire here in Arizona about 4 years ago, and you photograph reminds me of that. Great job Paul
adgray

...2 days ago on Easter Saturday, you could still smell the ash!

Heartbreakingly stark.
Wonderful emotion in your processing

Superb Paul. The close grouping of trees makes it so dramatic. It’s an image which makes you want to look and then turn away in sadness. I took part in the VAPS organised shoot at Narbethong and that was so hard and sad and also so dramatic. Wish I could post some images but they are banned for the time being.

I know what you mean.. I could have shot the flattened houses and burnt out cars – but it felt wrong…
Paul Louis Vil...
Such intensity.
It hits close to home and I’ve seen this kind of scene close up. A friend I work with, his family home was 500mts from this kind of devastation. Along with your sense of framing and production this is a superb reminder of how art can be respectful and encapsulating, Well done Paul. :D
Anthea Slade
A poignant and sobering image Paul…evokes a sense of the trauma and devastation of Black Saturday and the grief that we all felt with the loss ot lives, land and wildlife…Powerful…and breathtakingly raw…Amazing capture and composition. We shall never forget that day…
jumpy
ohhh thats a beauty!!
DeviousLili
Still so saddening to gaze at. Thank you for reminding me that there is still much to do. Please snug your wife and tell her that I’m glad her parents are safe and well, still.
Mizz1
this is surreal and beautiful and sad… absolutely moving pic Paul… thanks for showing us this!
mstrace
this looks utterly, blindingly surreal. the tree trunks are all so close together, forcing the viewer to become aware of what a landscape of lush green beauty this must have been before devastation exacted its toll. brilliant photo.
Christina Norwood
Stark and striking. Excellent work Paul.
Mark German
Very nice photo, Paul.
Susan Trigg
Great image, Paul! Quite apart from the emotional impact, it has such a strong graphic style to it.

Amazing image, The trees are stripped of all life, yet they are still so beautiful.
Maria Mann
Paul, you have combined photojournalism with art beautifully, making us understand how helpless we are in this universe. This are so eloquent, quietly powerful.
deepbluwater
so beautifully done Paul. this image makes me become still, silent, respectful. I am reminded of our deep connection to the earth to be grateful for our place here. so beautifully seen…
Christopher Bi...
such a waste – you have managed to create a really wonderful tribute in this image and strangely there is a real beauty in this image.
janniev
This is an amazing photo showing the devastation of that day and, yet . . . the light has filtered in amongst the trees gives this a very strong, haunting beauty. If the trees weren’t too badly damaged, they’ll be showing new growth in the not too distant future.
natapee
intense.
Nacho Garcés
Excellent image Paul.
Clare McClelland
I can’t believe there isn’t a shred of green in that forest yet…
I shed some tears in Marysville on Saturday…
Beautiful work Paul.
~ Ademac
Very moving….........................such a sad time for so many Victorians.
Earhart Chappe...
paul, even at a moment you shed you photos in such a light where , even with what stands, your photo tells so much more …it can leave one speechless-chappel
Michael Kienhuis
Wonderful image capturing a devastating event.
Rhana Griffin
I am overcome.
fullcirclemand...
dof amazing – framing amazing – starkness shocking – your eye is drawn into the picture, into the devastation… the stark tall trees standing sentinel…
Pip Gerard
I feel ashamed that I think it’s beautiful just because of the pain it’s caused.
But it is so very beautiful.
The lines and shapes at the base of the trunks.(especially the extra curvaceous one) look incredible.
You’ve made it so extra special with the added mirroring
Robyn Lakeman
Amazing capture Paul. From experience up here in the hills the trees have generally started to regenerate but this just shows the intensity of this fire, apparently it was equivalent to 6 Hiroshima bombs and just left the trees like black sticks. Too close for your wife’s parents I would say.
KiwiAna
Just so empty, like so many lives affected by it.
DaKa
incredible shot Paul.send chills down your spine ???
Tom Gomez
15 minutes away is far too close for comfort. Thankfully, the trees will regenerate, but the loss of lives was just too awful and we all feel for the people who have lost homes and loved ones through this tragedy. A stark but stangely beautiful scene. Well captured paul …
anne reeskamp
impressive… ! ( If the sun wouldn’t shine, it would be rather lugubrious….! ). Great shot, Paul !
Antanas
lovely work
ltruskett
such an arresting image…...........takes your breath away actually. To simply view this image is hard on the nerves ….....to live 15 minutes away would be hell on earth for anyone. Glad your in-laws are safe….......... the trees that now stand like giant burned matches are in a ‘bizarro’ way – ‘beautiful’.......what the folks ran from and died in was anything but…...............
Jacky
I think this picture tells a thousand words without showing any personal drama..very well done !!
Franklin Lindsey
There’s nothing plain about this capture Paul. Look at it long enough and it resembles something out of a Tolken story, “and they may come alive”...lol
butchart
like a true artist… you have managed to find the intrinsic beauty and power in such a tragic scene and time…........ stunning work my friend.. i’m sure this was not an easy shoot…...... bravo….....b
natalia martin...
Brilliant work, the sterility feeling is overwhelming in this composition
Shanina Conway
Incredible Paul, I know it also represents such sadness and loss but there is so much beauty too;)
CLiPiCs
Despite the horror that caused this, there is a certain beauty to be seen,
your framing with the silver tree in the centre bathed in light makes it almost magical, but not quite, because the tragedy is there too
gobsmacking image Paul,
and glad to know from others comments that you and yours are oK

Beauty from devastation, and a hint of the renewal to come. Great tones and format too. Bravo.
janeymac
awesome capture Paul. Too close for comfort ! The fires came to within 12 ks of my home that day Saturday, I will never forget it . I hope your in-laws are ok . Jane
Mark Ross
Jeez Paul, is this ever a striking image if I dare say such a thing. We must remember that from ashes comes new life. Perhaps this shall be a reminder of that later on. It was a terrible thing that happened, no doubt but even so, there is a kind of beauty here. Superb photograph indeed!
berndt2
excellent shot – at first it almost looked like a barcode with so many narrow trunks all vertical. Then I noticed one or two trunks more brown than black.. it’s a really cool image
cdwork
Wonderful lines and tones

i so wanted to do a shoot after the bushfires, but was afraid people would think of it as insensitive. is it strange that i think it looks beautiful?

It really does look like it is taken on another planet, went up here a few weeks ago to our friends who lost everything, a very humbling experience…..............great lines and capture of such a sad event in our history x

Paul (Quixote)...
Excellent work. I love the composition and the starkness of the tree limbs
sendhu
Good shot.
Deborah Parkin
such an intriguing image Paul – beautifully abstract yet so much detail. The tones and shapes are wonderful.
Mark Richards
Wow, Paul there is so much in this that represents so many different things to different people. And I see a profound beauty in what I see!
Adrian Donoghue
The colour of the earth is frightening, so scorched, so much tragedy associated here.
Dave Pearson
I’m caught up in the mirroring about 1/4 of the way down the image. I didn’t notice it at first but, now I have, I can’t “unnotice” it. If that was deliberate that was a stroke of genius.
msgigi
what a beautiful and powerful image. through the devastation the trees still stand! life and nature will find it’s way, and will flourish again!
yellowbobbypins
Surreal atmosphere…...beautiful and full of melancholy.
Gratziela Gal
Hey Paul,
Very beautiful. It looks surreal. When I saw the avatar, I expected a nude model in the middle of the woods. It’s just something that you’d do and what a fascinating shot it’d be!!!! This photo looks like a painting. The trees seem to be made of rubber and I think that rusty tint works perfectly!!!
Steve Chapple
Outstanding work. Such power in this yet so serene, (if you get my meaning).
Dave Hiskey
stunningly, powerful shot….this says more than any words could say..
Julian Escardo
Exquisite light and flow of form….....and a very honorable rendition to an “aftermath”.

oustanding work, a great gallery, congrats!!
Rosina Lamberti
Absolutely breathtaking,,such a tragedy for so many!!
Lawrence Norton
After working up there 3 day’s after the fire’s, it still give’s me chills to see the burnt trees.
The black trunk’s catch the true essance of the harsh burnt out forest realy well, providing a striking feel to your image. I espeshilly love how straight the tree’s are they draw the eye to the lifeless earth realy well.
Which area was this in ?
Well done
Atheum
How sad… the wise trees that once lived there now leave coarse black cloaks. I hope humans learn how to wear cloaks like they do.
BleuRaven
fantastic capture ~ excellent composition, love the contrasts
Svetlana Sewell
WOW!!! I was looking at it for a while – mezmorising composition!
Instant favo!!!
Lisa Defazio
Perfectly straight tree in the center, bowed and buckled to the left…..and that’s kind of how it went isn’t it.
Making no sense.
Lisa Defazio
I will be posting my most recent take on the fires later today.
GerryMac
stunning capture!

Heather Rivet...

Jan Fijolek
Terrifying and beautiful ;)
John Kowalski
I spent some time in the Kinglake area recently and was utterly horrified at the total destruction these fires left. A stirring image of such devastation, thank you for sharing Paul
NAGILLAH
A powerful image!!
Graeme Pettit ...
What a stark but intriguing image Paul. I flew over the NorthWest of Oz a few days back and saw fires all over, seemingly just left to burn, but hard to tell at 30,000 feet – frightening to be stuck in the middle of (have been many years back – never want it again)
simonesphotos
Powerful image Paul, lets hope it never happens again eh.
Tania Rose
Haunting in the stillness, Paul. This shot is captivating, and it takes a lot to captivate me. The irony of that is that statement is that there is nothing specific in the subject to draw one in, so what is it that keeps me staring, until i can almost sense movement in my peripheral vision? Stillness moves me, and this i would frame in black, methinks

Paul Vanzella
....wow – thanks tania, yes stillness can be captivating – love how you wrote this… and yes, methinks black too! THNAKS!
Steven Sandner
What a terrible day in Victoria’s history that was.
Anita Schep
Wow. Scary. But love the repetition. Very mysterious and spooky.
