I have it on good authority that ‘the cricketers’ is the name of a public house in Hampshire where they developed a bat and ball game based on the siege of a castle. never realised that it still was played… tell me is that Ian Botham on the left???

What a comment. What a shot.

Perhaps it’s not all the fault of our sports men. Perhaps we, society, are to blame too. We thrust them, ill prepared and simple, into limelight and scrutiny. If they win, we cheer. When they fail, we gloat. Perhaps it’s the loss of simple anonymity or the pressures on their families.

Perhaps some of them loathe what they become, what their peers become.

  • Lance Leopold

    Lance Leopold

I like quite a few,did not notice the woman in the shot at fist glance, and as a red blooded male i can honestly say, that in this case the image stands perfectly on its own without her,as we are all familiar with “the look” of losing, this image says it to perfection, love everything about it,lighting, pose, processing and mood, well done,as always,Paul.

  • Juilee Pryor

    Juilee Pryor

I’ve had to think carefully about this shot. I love the guys and the pensive meloncholy air they are exuding but not that sure it needs the nude. In fact I find her a bit distracting and gratuitous. Not sure it adds that much to what other wise is a great portrait shot.

  • skunk

Lol I just came back to this shot to tell you I think she should have her knickers on at least, and here she is with them on lol!!! I agree with some of the guys here saying this pic could have stood on hits own without her, but I don’t mind it with the knickers on, a bit less “in the face” but still cheeky.

Fab lighting effect. Great shot. I would have to assume these are Brits!!!!!!! If that’s what they have on their minds, no wonder they can’t win The Ashes. LOL. I’m a Brit and I’m allowed to say that, I think!

  • caseycastille

    caseycastille

This is so very interesting – a toothy image! There’s so much to it. I love the colors and tones. It has a feeling similar to an Edward Hopper painting, and just a touch of surrealism and moonlight.

  • Jo O'Brien

    Jo O'Briencommunity ambassador

When I see works of art like this I realise how redundant models are – what you have here are actors. Look at those faces, how emotive they are. And then you step in and create this solemn and slightly surreal world where nothing is as it first appears. The light and texture in this adds so much to the image. Fantastic work.

  • bluerabbit

  • blueeyesjus

    blueeyesjus 12 days ago

Brilliant, like Earheart my attention was focussed on the players expressions and forlorn body language and those cool blue tones that wash over the image makes it feel almost like a dungeon hence their combined misery, a great contrast to what we expect on those sizzling hot days at the cricket. And I havent even mentioned “those” legs, fantastic work Paul

  • Paul Vanzellafounder replied 11 days ago

thank you for your wonderful thoughts here – great words…!
