The Anatomy of Illustration

Sprawled Traintrack – Dissecting Your Imagination…. a few titles came to mind. Combining illustration and photography to push an idea to the extreme. Really happy with the way the light works off the jeans.

I was actually trvelling through Italy at the time and in all the supermarkets were heaps of raw meat, slami, proscuitto etc on display, so I wanted to do a tongue in cheek combination of my environment at the time, thus combined a not so realsitic salami shot I took in a supermarket witht the body and traintracks. Lots of fun!

nice work paul! very clean and professional result…. i would have liked to see the slice positioned where the trains wheels had passed but i’m being very picky….. good to see some more of your skills on display…..

Thanks guys the train tracks and the body aren’t meant to be too literall, more like two images interplaying with eachother to evoke reaction, the widest part of the body proving to have more imapct… but I do see your point “M”...

My brother used to work for a morgue and he was once called to a site where a drunk man had stumbled upon some railroad tracks and made himself comfortable so he could fall asleep. Long story short, he feel asleep and had an encounter with a train. His accident wasn’t so lighthearted but I do think this is a very creative idea.

Local girl where I live lay on the track a couple of years back, train didn’t kill her immediately, lost her legs, died later. Crap for the driver too. A relative of mine had two suicides jump in front of his train on London Underground. Wrecked him too.
Passengers get so grumpy these days when it happens, delays everything and everyone.

I do like your work on here, but not so keen on this one.

WOW! So I am not the only one doing “anatomy of” photos. I think you may get a call from Dr. Gunther von Hagens soon. It is going to take me a while to get through all your images. When are you going to bring out a book ?

Paul, so many things come to mind here, where to start? FIRST, PERHAPS, that you laid upon this track LIKE THIS! WOW. Then ,that you bring to life the very horrific notion we all have thinking of what happens when lying on a train track – disection! And then, the somewhat over-the-top and waaaay obvious, tidy, meat layering at the cut point is is wonderfully B-movie, John Waters, or David Lynch!!!

This is so thoughtful, shocking, and yet manageable because of your specific artistic and creative treatment of it. Again, you bring to life our greatest fears, and force us to look. AND, god DA%^....you make it look like art! You make the hideous palatable, accessible, therefore bringing it round to the mind, no longer hidden, and frankly, you leave me watching and wanting for more.

  • Paul Vanzella

Paul Vanzellaworks here in reply to LauraHartley’s comment, 21 days ago

this has to be the most superb comment written.. love how you acknowledged John Waters and David Lynch – heck – i think we share the same brain Laura! Love the intensity on which you write – you so get me!!!! Thank you!

  • LauraHartley

Paul, I feel, when I view your work, that if I could BE you, I would do exactly what you are doing. Since I cannot BE you, I UNDERSTAND you, and that is a true thrill. Every time I come here and see a new piece, I am left feeling an odd sense of familiarity. Clearly, man, we’re both just SICK!!! HAHAHA! LOVE, LOVE what you do!
