Red Cadillac

Paul Vanzella

Red Cadillac

OK, OK – I’ve held off for as long as I can…..

Combining my love of industrial landscapes and my awesome 1957 Cadillac Coupe DeVille, I just couldn’t resist combining the two, so I re visited my favourite location, Sommerville Street, Sunshine and set up the new shot.

Here the 57 Cadillac showcases the beautiful angles of the wrap around back windscreen and customised fins in natural light. I love the austere, clinical design feeling this image evokes. To me it’s pure design in all aspects of landscape through to automotive design.

The colours just make it surreal. If it wasn’t for the containers in the background, you’d think this wasn’t a photo :)

the curves of the cadillac just emphasise the pessimism I see in the whole jeffrey smart aesthetic.. this work is like a dialogue between two futurists, only one of which is at all hopeful.

I mean, look at the car – it was designed for a future that was automated and industrial, but at the same time organic, ergonomic, maybe recreational.. happy. Whereas the architect of the yellow poles promises us that people will come second to shipping containers, and that even our appreciation of the work itself is cold and formulaic.

so Paul the car, for me, is like the trees in the carpark , where you’ve sort of subverted the grim (and tired) predictions of our concrete/urban/roadsigns future, by admitting elements designed for emotion instead of just intellect or aesthetic.

aaaanyhoo, nice work, as always :)

Hai! This is fantastic.. I’m glad to see another in this series as they are my favs. Love everything in this and the Cad7 takes it to another level. The contrast of the hard lines against the caddy’s sexy body are really working for me. Another well designed image!! Now go and watch the cricket.

Thanks so much for the great comments – especially Grant’s insight which is a work of verbal art in itself, and I love his connection to trees in the carpark. And as for Lindsay, yes, sitting in a hotel room in Hong Kong at present and rain has delayed the World Cup final between Australia and Sri Lanka, so I’m just waiting for play to begin…. Great to get so many awesome comments – fills my creative headspace with glee!

this didn’t come up in my activity monitor…glad a came across it though…brilliant work as always paul…... great colours…. and as with all your shots it walks a strange and perplexing line between 2 and 3d…the elements themselves seem somehow flattened and yet their arrangement to one another presents us with a sense of such incredible depth of perspective.
beguiling image…..top stuff…..big ups to you

I found this while looking through the “featured” photos. I don’t know where it was featured, but I can see why it would have been. After looking at the photo for awhile, and seeing all the fine elements you’ve put together, the one thing that strikes me the most is the fabulous refractions in the rear windscreen of your magic caddy.

You are good! How many times did you have to move the car to get it right? just kidding! It is a great set-up. You do quite well with this photography! The lines are just right and the depth perseption is wonderful. The little lights lined up in between the rails of the fence the posts the buildings the shadows under the car the little light beneath the rear bumper or license plate reflecting on the ground. The shadow of the divider..Color co-ordination all good! Well done! Alot of detail and balance of the frame by the yellow post and the tall building. Excellent!
