Cadillac Motel

This really made me smile – that old motel is so retro (why anyone would need a motel in oakleigh, I’m not sure), and you’ve done a fine job of bringing that out. Congrats.

You have got those pink and pastel tones working so well together in a fine composition.

Beautiful. It could be from the set of some David Lynch or Kubrick film. That fabulous pink and the depth of field are what make it for me. I half expect Lady Penelope to roll up in FAB1.

I like your Cadillac Motel – very timely for us here in Sydney where the Rose Seidler house was open for the weekend, and the Fifties Fair was celebrated. The car, motel, colour, everything would have fit in so well at the fair. I can just see the people lining up to book a room…actually, I’m surprised I haven’t seen any images from the Ffities Fair posted on RB?

Anyway, more to the point, I love this image, I know where to stay when next in Melbourne! : )

Very evocative even though I’m too young to remember a time of pink Cadillacs and diners! : )

This is so absolutely perfect an image it almost makes me hurt – in a good way. Everything about it is so dreamlike, so candy, so evocative – I love it. Truly superb. Brings to mind a certain swath of highway that cuts from Phoenix to L.A. through Twenty-Nine Palms and the Mojave Desert. Time stops out there, and it is a piece of diffuse ephemera – diners, hot rods moldering on the desert floor, ancient waitresses who have never known any other profession. Very David Lynch, which is who this photo reminds me of. I can almost hear it having its own soundtrack!

It is exactly the sort of picture I want to be taking…..maybe i find your nude stuff too threatening as a woman….i’m not sure. Whatever happened to salmon and ochre in the artist’s palette? Oh sure, there are those who find it a bit like mixing Britney Spears with the scent of tar, or maybe feathers and ball bearings… but I digress.

The composition, shapes, and forms all rock here, but the real wonder is where how nostalgia seems fenced back from history by a border of retro.

No… no… I don’t have any idea what that last line means either… or why this image works so powerfully. But both that nostalgia/history/retro thingee and this salmon/ochre image are somewhere married in my imagination. That’s what art does… pushes us through the plane to free fall into the resonance of imagination. Thanks for the shove Paul….

One of the things I really enjoy about your work is how you capture classic “take me back” moments. I also like how you colorize images. The way you treat them lets the art itself speak. The view does not get lost by distractions but they are taken in by the subject and the total feel of the image. That’s what I like about your work…..
