It looks like a hot hot day up there at the lookout…..I want to crane my neck to see the view….simple and expressive, this image, Paul…..very nice indeed!
This is just awesome… Again you’ve taken your art to another level, one of your best!! A stunning piece, wonderful treatment.. your use of space is perfect, can’t get enough of this one.. V. Impressive!
I live in Penticton, BC, Canada…and the tourist are to much to handle….in the summer, winery tours, Ironman Canda, Elvis festival, Peach Festival…..etc.etc…etc.. but you have captured it very nicely,,,Keep on, keeping on…as we say.
Yes!!!The real world but not quite – it’s hard to define what gives this (and your work in general) the strange dreamlike quality….whatever it is, it works!!!
Fantatsic – I’m still trying to figure out how you do this mate. Again its got that 1950’s caledar / painterly look that has become distinctly ‘Vanzella’.
I think this one , for me at least , is the best to date. Your work reminds me of Jack Vettriano, and i think it could be as popular, please give us some tips.
Love this Paul! Love everyone’s postures. They all seem like they’re standing just slightly exaggerated. It reminds me of Norman Rockwell’s art. Fantastic!
Great work paul ! This does have a very 50’s retro look and feel to it, also has that look of a very balmy day with a thunderstorm looming… makes you wonder what these people are talking and thinking about, brilliant work !!
Hi Paul great shot indeed. We are all “Just Visiting” This link even proves it ….http://www.poodwaddle.com/worldclock.swf This site made me realize that our planet is actually just an exchange point for souls in transit to many points unkown.
Great composition. I love the way the view becomes unimportant and the tourists have a plastic, less than real quality and a a general attitude of not caring about what they are seeing. It is a good take on tourists in general. “Rubberneckers”. I like this alot.
It’s a gem! I really like the “bronzed statue” effect that you have given to the onlookers…and I’m assuming the woman 2nd from left has been inspired by the salmon colored bathing attire and is reaching for her bathing cap also. Bravo on creating a classic piece.
WOW and WOW again… thank you all for such wonderful comments… love how this has been received… makes me feel fantastic! All that I’ve intended in this image has been realised… Thanks a million!
what could I possibly add that hasn’t been said already… this is a brilliantly composed and executed image.. your signature warm tones are exceptional as ever love the selective burning and dodging on the clothes beautiful smooth gradients and a powerful finished product great work…. !!!!! :)
hey paul! thanks for the advice! yes i am an architect and yes i have checked out PSC and ICPP. i am not sure which one to do…. dont really want to go back to uni full time (5 years was enough for architecture!).... but i really want to be doing more photography on a career level…. paula :o)

thank you paul i loved the feeling it has a ver meer to it i did a painting of it in his style and gave it to my grand daughter seem i don,t need to say your art is good or great looks like every one else HAS but it was a pleasure to give all your photo,s a good look
Gosh, have to do some serious scrolling to make a comment. Fantastic shot! Love your choice of framing, and the tones…so unique. Can just feel the heat of the sun on the backs of their legs.
It’s like I’ve gone back in time… I really love the tones in this.. I would’ve liked it to be square with some more sky but that’s also cause I love square crops :P I love the atmosphere it sets! :D
Ooo – I love this! It almost looks painted, just beautiful. Thank you for your lovely comment recently – made my day! I would love to see my work hanging in a gallery taking on momentum also…

my girlfriend and i repeatedly return to this picture. we casually ignore tourist and automatically assume that standing around is mundane. yet you’ve taken this simple moment and have enriched it with complexity.
You have a way with capturing just everyday images, that chance every second. I want to know this one thing, I captured a shot of what looks like a couple holding hands, do you have to have permission first, just in case it not husband and wife. I am not sure which way to go, I don’t want to break anybody up, or get sued. Can you advise me, Please?
I’ve just spent the longest time browsing through your portfolio, wondering how on earth I’d have time to comment on every one as they deserve! I love them all…such every day images with extraordinary perspective and effect. I picked this one however, because of it’s sense of peace. Here are some people not in a hurry to do anything or be anywhere. Enjoying the moment…not something the rest of us do enough.

Hey, I am new, I was going through and this really stuck out to me. Great job, the simplicity is what drew me to it.
I see that someone else already compared your work to Jack Vettriano…that was my first impression when I saw this shot. Fantastic shot! Very inspiring.
Love this. A real feeling of Kitch to it. Fantastic colours and composition. I also love the way you cant quite work out what they are looking at.. Great work!
Very painterly, very very nice and something that should could would be hung. I really like it, sort of thing that could be reshot/repainted with different characters again and again.
I have no idea what FX you use-(the dreaded impossible layering I presume?!!) Ugh…someday. :/ Anyway..this is fantastic. The free space at the top adds MUCH to this..by just being there. The 2nd woman on the left is scaring me though.. (little too close!) A+++ :)
cool treatment, they look plastic..first impression it looks retro then you see what they’re wearing. really enjoying your colour choices across all your work.
Been said already but Hopper or Vetriano were the artists this work of art made me think of straight away. I have long wanted to be able to do this to some of my photos – never managed it so am incredibly jealous lol – but pleased to know it can be done ;) Now all I have to do is find out how lol
Hey, Paul, just re-visiting one of your superb pics. Your talent must, at times, be a cross to bear! LOL…......(still laughing). If I were you – I wouldn’t be able to get my head through the door! :))
This one draws heaps of people in the flesh, so many have commented on how amazing a painting it is, they cant believe its a photo. Draws a lot of people into the gallery as well.
Wonderful. I enjoy the soft warm colors in contrast to the looming grey clouds, as well as the irony. ‘The tourists of nothing’. Tee hee. That had happened to me on a trip once. You climb to this great vantage point, where you are supposed to be able to see for miles and miles, but then it decided to get cloudy and you couldn’t see anything. Great work! ;o)
It has a painterly quality and it’s almost as if you color tinted the clothing and skin tones as seen in an old photograph. Did you use Photoshop? It looks like you airbrushed the people and I love the sun drenched lighting and brightness of the colors in their clothing. Did you gray out the background, as well? I’m sure you’re a gifted painter/artist to have gotten that lovely end result. It makes me want to create a story around the scene, so they’ll have somewhere to go when the boat docks, but then it would disturb the utterly wonderful feeling of total relaxation.
thank you for your kind words… staright shot taken on a Nikon D200 and yes, definitely treated in Photoshop to give it that painterly feel, and also to minmised the colour palette to create the final effect. Thank you so much!
How did you make this? It looks as though you took a picture of this and completely re-made the picture with model people (clay, wax, or something else) and used the original photo as the background. I’m not too sure, but that’s just me observing. This is very good, I was interested in how you composed this. (It’s very good!)
THANKS Atheum, it’s ONE shot – they were all there in front of my eyes, just some careful cropping and treatment with highlights and shadows mde the image come alive.. thanks so much for liking this! Also, the light on the Greek Isalnd of Santorini had something to do with it… it’s a sensation al place!
Hi Paul, The light, colors and composition are sensational, reminds me of swap card images we had as kids. Should be shown as a mural on a large wll of the new development at St Kilda Beach next to the Palais.
omg … soooooo masterfully composed and executed!!!! Speaking of stalking … forgive me if I seem to be stalking YOU in the next few days. Not enough time today, but I LOVE your perspective on the world and must come back to visit longer. Don’t mind me … I’ll be the one over here in the corner going oooo and ahhhhhh … and I always bring my own coffee.
They look like they are made of shiny plastic, soft, yet firm! And are standing at the balcony of a dolls house! I love this paul!! And the different stances!! Love it!!

Amazing colours and composition…

Great work! ;o)

Fab colours, comp and slice of life. Well done.

This image is so stunning! Everything about it is perfect!

Great shot Paul! The creaminess of your tones are gorgeous here and the unusual sky is just perfect! Wonderful image.

Thank you so much!
igotmeacanon
stunning shot and treatment, the colour palette is lush

How did you make this? It looks as though you took a picture of this and completely re-made the picture with model people (clay, wax, or something else) and used the original photo as the background. I’m not too sure, but that’s just me observing. This is very good, I was interested in how you composed this. (It’s very good!)

THANKS Atheum, it’s ONE shot – they were all there in front of my eyes, just some careful cropping and treatment with highlights and shadows mde the image come alive.. thanks so much for liking this! Also, the light on the Greek Isalnd of Santorini had something to do with it… it’s a sensation al place!

Hi Paul,
The light, colors and composition are sensational, reminds me of swap card images we had as kids.
Should be shown as a mural on a large wll of the new development at St Kilda Beach next to the Palais.
