George [work in progress] by Paul McClintock

Currently unavailable for purchase

This is a work in progress for the International Superheroes of Illustration Elements: Tone challenge.

I’m uploading this to get some feedback and constructive criticism before I enter it into the challenge. I figure it’s about 95% complete, but I’m going to go back and clean it up and perhaps change some stuff if people find anything that could be improved.

I’d like to hear about perspective, lighting and most importantly my use of tone in this piece. Let rip!

Final version available here.

Paul is the physical location of a collection of otherwise disparate neurons and synapses that occasionally give a convincing impression of consciousness and free will as they react to the various stimuli in their immediate surroundings in a purely mechanistic, non magical way.

its looking pretty fucking tight man, I would experiment with his shadow a bit, see if darkening it up looks better/worse….but it looks great man

  • Cheers! Thanks for the tip. The shadow is kinda weird at the moment. I’m trying to find a balance between the texture of the sand and the shadows. Might take a while.

wow! its intense… I think its pretty much there. The only criticism I could give is sharpening up his back a little (to the right of his face) it looks a little blurry. The lighting is fab, and the energy is amazing. did you do this by hand or wacom just out of interest?

  • As always, I wacom’d it. I’m getting quite used to Painter 11’s brushes now.

His bum is blurry, I hadn’t even noticed. I’ve been focusing so much on his mouth.

hi paul. this is looking great! I reckon I like his bum blurry, it gives a good sense of speed. maybe even adding a bit of blurriness/lightness on his back left leg (on the right of the image – may give it even more movement). but maybe sharpen up the slight blurriness on his right upper lip. I love the sharp linework on his body. he’s a feisty little bugger isnt he?
