And it was like giving four sharp knocks at the door of unhappiness. by

For the most recent speed tee challenge over at A T-shirt Revolution.

The passage used is from the last scene of the first half of The Outsider. I’m sure you know it:

My whole being went tense and I tightened my grip on the gun. The trigger gave, I felt the underside of the polished butt and it was there, in that sharp but deafening noise, that it all started. I shook off the sweat and the sun. I realized that I’d destroyed the balance of the day and the perfect silence of this beach where I’d been happy. And I fired four more times at a lifeless body and the bullets sank in without leaving a mark. And it was like giving four sharp knocks at the door of unhappiness.

outsider, challenge, pauk, blue, beach, yellow, gun, speed

Paul is the physical location of a collection of otherwise disparate neurons and synapses that occasionally give a convincing impression of consciousness and free will as they react to the various stimuli in their immediate surroundings in a purely mechanistic, non magical way.

Nicely done – I think the expression on the gunman’s face sells the point nicely. Makes me want to revisit the book.

  • Reading the passage made me want to read the whole book again. In fact, I kept reading further and further, trying to find a description of the Arab, and a description of the protagonist (which was harder) and ended up reading several chapters.

Really nice Paul. Minimal linework, but the detail is all there.

  • It’s actually more detailed than I first intended.

Great tee Paul. I second RubyRed … simple linework and colouring but it needs nothing more.

  • Cheers Nat.
