Paul McClintockZuul, the Gatekeeper

A year for self portraits, part four.

Update: It’s finished.

I started another self portrait today. This time it’s for a redbubble challenge. This particular challenge happens to have a good prize. A really good prize.

So for the last 6 hours or so I’ve been painting, and I’m really happy with the result so far. So much so that I cannot go to bed without sharing this with someone.

Entries for the happy challenge don’t open for another 6 days, so I’ve got a while to refine this.

Nice work mate – what medium are you using (digital)?

  • Paul McClintockZuul, the Gatekeeper replied

Yes, it’s digital. I don’t own any real paintbrushes. Painter 11, mostly using the airbrush tool.

Stunning work mate! Is this for the Happy challenge? I’m asking because I am wondering how you graded yourself?

  • Paul McClintockZuul, the Gatekeeper replied

Yep, it’s for the happy challenge. I haven’t decided exactly what my grade should be (although if you look at the url of the image, it might give you a clue). The thing is, the number has gone up since I started painting.

  • Paul McClintockZuul, the Gatekeeper replied

    ...It’s pi

This is stunning Paul. I’d be rating myself as a 10 if I could pull off a self portrait as amazing as this in 6 hours.

  • Paul McClintockZuul, the Gatekeeper replied

Well, I started off at about 3 today… and as I kept painting I kept going up. I’d be super high right now – but I’m really tired. I should be in bed.

Paul, this is really fabulous. And I reckon your about a 5 on the happy scale – right in the middle. Dont forget to make it the correct dimensions!

  • Paul McClintockZuul, the Gatekeeper replied

Don’t worry, this is just a crop of the full image. I’ve been working on a 16×9 canvas.

Effing Brilliant Paul! Did you do this from a mirror or a photo or was it all from memory?

  • Paul McClintockZuul, the Gatekeeper replied

I wish I could do it from memory. Perhaps another ten years of practise and I’ll be able to.

I used a photo for reference.

excellent Paul…..pi hey….hhmmm…..I did 7 photoshopped portraits last night because yes there is a very good prize for this. I’m only going for 5 because I figure I can only give an average and I’m at both ends of the scale all the time…...stilll yours has a bit of a similar feel to the pick of mine at the moment. this will be an interesting competition. keep painting, you do it very very well.
