FLYBOY IMAGE COLLECTION dedicated to my favorite Flyboy – my husband, Monty.
The vintage war planes and pyrotechnics were amazing at a recent airshow held at the J.H. Towers Field, Richard B. Russell Regional Airport in Rome, GA.
Short History of the Airport: In 1942 the county government purchased 670 acres for development of an airport near Rome. Shortly afterwards, though, it was turned over to the Department of the Navy, who built three asphalt runways for use as a Naval Auxiliary Air Base. After WWII ended, the airport was deeded back to Floyd County and named for Senator Richard B. Russell.
In 2004, the terminal building was named after Admiral John H. Towers, known as the Father of Naval Aviation, who was born and raised in Rome, Georgia.
