A thousand Yellowstone wonders are calling, ‘Look up and down and round about you! John Muir – 1898

The temperatures were in the single digits on this cold, snowy January morning at West Thumb Geyser Basin, which is one of the smallest geyser basins in Yellowstone.

A incredibly scenic area along the shore of Yellowstone Lake, West Thumb only has a small amount of geyser activity. However, the basin more than makes up for it with its diversity. Despite its small size, it has paint/mud pots, hot springs, pools, lake shore geysers, and fumaroles. Fumaroles are small openings that release steam and other gasses.

You can see in the foreground the muddy, soupy waters inundating the paint pots. The white area beyond the tree line in the right hand side of the photograph is Yellowstone Lake.

Thank you, Bianca. We visited in January 2006 and yes, we flew into Jackson Hole. Spent 10 wonderful days at the Tetons and Yellowstone. We toured in a van with those big snow tracks on it. Personal vehicles not allowed in the park in winter.

Beautiful capture! I went on a recent photography tour of 10 National Parks but unfortunately, Yellowstone was closed – at least the North Entrance was. Not taking the time to venture to the South Entrance is one of my biggest regrets of that trip, even more so after seeing your photo.

Your interview with Susi Lawson brought me here to your gorgeous portfolio, and I’m so glad I came. This is one of the most awesome shots of Yellowstone I’ve seen! You seized the moment when the sparse rays of sunshine were just right to bring out those amazing contrasts, and you nailed it. Beautiful work!

  • Patricia Montg... replied

Thank you so much, kind sir! With an incredible portfolio of images such as yours, I am humbled by your wonderful comment on my work. Susi is a delight (as I am sure you well know) and I am pleased that my interview with her brought you over my way!
