The Making of Medieval Sword In Progress

Artist's Description

The making of a “Knight’s Best Friend”, a medieval sword in progress: captured in the smithy during the process of forging a medieval sword. Used the light from fire in the furnace and lights provided in the smithy.
Here you can see the Blade with the Fuller — A groove or trough in the center of the blade shaft extending from the hilt down through part or the entirety of the blade. The fuller was employed to lighten the blade and also to add strength and resiliency in much the way an H-girder performs. Makers’ marks of a medieval sword could be found in this area as well as decorative incised designs.
