Victorian Scullery Maid by

Upstairs Downstairs….

In the Victorian era, the laundry machine was the scullery maid. Washing a single load of laundry by hand took roughly 50 gallons of water. She would then have to wait for it to naturally dry before ironing.
While waiting, she would have to go back to the scullery to wash the breakfast dishes used by both masters and servants. According to “Jane Austin’s World,” scullery maids walked “148 miles toting water and carried over 36 tons of water” every year just doing laundry.

Wages: approx 2 shillings per day, food and beer provided, bonus: back breaking work and hardly hours off only with permission.

Shot taken during the “Christmas in Old Kampen event” 2011
Equipment: Eyes, hands, mind, soul, Canon Eos 30D
Straight from camera, no flash, hand held.
