LIFE OF A FERAL CAT...Beaten but not down! by

I was born to mummy inside a house. There was seven of us my brothers and sisters. I was the only fully orange one, “Beautiful eyes”, I heard someone say. Next I know my siblings and I are in a dark place, a garbage bag, we are in a moving vechile. Next we’ve stopped, placed on a lonely country road and left. It’s quiet outside other than everyone meowing, “Whats going on?” The next thing I know I’m outside the bag, the only survivor, the others died after that unknowing truck hit the bag. Now what…
Months pass I have survived on small animals, mice, frogs or bugs, finding water when I can. I have met a few others, they are never friendly, they always want to fight, I am male so they don’t want me around. The bug bites, fleas, the itching is terrible, my fur is very matted it provides some protection, the nights are getting colder, winter is coming. This winter I lose part of my tail and the tips of both my ears, but I still have my beautiful eyes. I have now had a few fights, so far I have won them all. I have gained some females, even mated and so far kept the home I found, a hollowed out log. Hard to find something to drink, in Alberta temps can get as low as -40C. Those days I stay in my log, too dangerouse out there, too cold. On warmer days I drink melted snow, careful not to drink antifreeze from the humans, it can kill. The humans are all around, I try to advoid them , you can’t trust them. We are waste to them easily disposed of. Don’t they realize we are meant to be indoors, loved, petted, brushed and cared for and we will be forever devoted to them. We are a domesticated animal, were not meant to be in the wild, we are not lions or tigers, silly people. I don’t need them anyway, I don’t care. I cry I’m not sure why.
I make it through my first winter, according to others three is my max, we will see… Dam there is a new male around, he is huge. The next day I run into him, he wants my log, my females, he wants me gone, we fight. Man I lose big time, he’s hurt me bad. The fox didn’t get me, nor the coyottes or dogs, but one of my own kind did. He didn’t kill me, but the infections from the injurys will. I won’t see another winter, guess the stats are right. He’s hurt my eyes, my beautiful eyes. Well with the ones I fathered I’m sure one or two might get my eyes. Wish I was an inside house cat, lucky ones they are. Days later I’m so tired, I’ll just lay here next to this tree, rest awhile, my eyes are so painful, I shut them. I never leave this tree, my eyes never open again, I’m gone. Another wildcat forgotten…

Although this story is fictional it is based on truth. This image is an orange tabby that has been around awhile and just started excepting food from me. I will call him Matt as he is terribly matted. Two weeks ago I took a lovely image of him he has beautiful eyes, the other day I saw him like this. I don’t know if he will make it, I hope so, he was terrribly beaten up but not down…not yet.
I care for several wildcats within our country area. Many are “drop offs”, the ones people decide they don’t want anymore, brought to the country and left to fend for themselves. Others are born in the wild off springs of the “drop offs” as none are ever fixed. I have been feeding and watching several in a family for about two years now .Many have come and gone, lost to preditors or the elements. Many are captured in my images. Many have a special place in my heart. I recently took in two, I’d take them all in if I could, but I’m not a “cat lady” and thats not reality. So I do what I can I make shelters for them and feed them regularly. If this story or image seems graphic or harsh, my appoligies, but it is the life of a ferral cat. I hope this image or story has touched you, even educated you. I dream that one day all cats will be cared for indoors where they belong. If I have motivated you to help, all you have to do is bring one of these beautiful creatures in from the cold.

I am an artist, a poet, a photographer, a mother and a wife. I love capturing images, my favorite are animal portraits and florals. I enjoy closeups/macros as they show what are eyes sometimes miss. I hope you enjoy my heart and soul within my images. :)Pat

    Poor baby :(

  • Thank you for taking the time to comment, it is sad. I felt obligated to show this image, its harsh and the story graphic but many think putting a cat in the wild is an ok thing to do, their free, but it is a hard life and shows no mercy to these lovely creatures. Thank you for the fave as well, hopefully someone will see this and it will make them think twice, before allowing a cat to be “free”. All my best :)Pat

Bless this poor baby and you for trying to take care of him. I wish more people would take care of their animals if they are going to have them. I am not sure if I have told you or not, but we have 7 cats and 3 dogs, which was plenty for us and all had been fixed. Well, Jan. 8th we found to stray puppies and January 26th we found a stray dog, who unfortunately is pregnant and due any time now. I couldn’t just leave them running wild and I couldn’t take them to the shelter to be put to sleep, so, for now, they live in a LARGE pen in our yard with a HUGE dog house. We might can keep the three we found but I will have to try to find a home for the babies that are coming.

  • Oh Debbie you are such a sweetheart for all you do i wish there are more like you out there. Thank you for taking the time to comment it is so appreciated all my best and fingers crossed for finding homes for the babies. :)Pat

Pat…I am sitting crying my heart out for this poor sad baby, and what a beautiful cat this baby is, I am so sad, mad, and upset, forgive me but I could kick the shit out of people who do NOT fix their pets, then down the road, don’t give a damn what happens to the off spring, I have fight my whole life to help and bring awareness to f this kind of cruelty! I cannot tell you how many times I have ran across this exact thing in my neighborhood…… I am always bringing cats or dogs home and always see to it that they are fixed and find a forever home….People are just reckless and cruel when it comes to animals, One thing about RB and especially Members of my Groups, they give me faith as you are doing right now, hopefully some day, (not in my life time) but some day this will end……………………………………………………………
I am Honored to award you

  • Oh thank you Laura you are such a sweet kind soul. I only hope this hits home with some one any one and it comes to an end as well. The cats that are loved and cared for bring a lot of pleasure into a home. But these poor ones who are thrown to the elements have a hard time.We do’nt have any around my area. but they must have a tough time just staying alive. My first cat was found in a bin ,tied up in a plastic bag about 3 weeks old , and she gave me so much joy and lived to the ripe age of 23 years old. Best Wishes Eva xxxx

  • Thank you for taking the time to view the image and story it is greatly appreciated. Knowing people put these animals in this situation is hard to take but knowing there are good caring people out there such as yourself gives me hope for their future. Thank you for all you do as well. Hugs :)Pat

Oh my goodness!!!! You are such a wonderful person, doing this for these cats! Aw poor thing, I really can’t understand people being so awful to cats and other animals. It happens a lot in Greece and it happens to dogs mostly. I wish I could take all of them in and look after them!!!!
Excellent story too, I found it very moving, what the poor things have to go through……….. I saw the other picture, is it the ‘An Orange Tabby: Old and wise’ picture? Aw he does indeed have beautiful eyes! :)))))))))))))))) x x x

  • Thank you for taking the time to view my humble image and read the story, it is appreciated. Yes this was the cat in Orange Tabby…Old and wise. I will be keeping a close eye on him and trying to help as i can. We see in with dogs /puppies out here as well but not as often, it is a sad situation and to know its humans that put them in this position just disgust me but knowing there are people out there like yourselves and the others that have responded gives me hope. Thank you again hugs :)Pat

This just is so sad and tears my heart out..that poor cat and how much care and love and help he needs; however, he just doesn’t understand….I am the owner of a feral that was like a wild animal when I brought her in and, today, she repays me with love constantly…those ferals have such a tough life and often short…their pain is prolonged as nobody can help them and eventually they just go off alone and how sad is that…please keep an eye on this beautiful guy, Pat, and do what you can for him…poor soul…thank you for caring for him…

  • Thank you for the lovely heartfelt comments greatly appreciated I will be watching this one closly in hopes he can make it through. It is such a tough life and to know it is humans that has brought this on disgusts me but knowing there are others out there that care as much as i do gives me hope thank you as well for all you do hugs my friend :)Pat
