Nanwan Monkey island
Hainan,China ( a tropical island)
April 2013 ,visited the Nanwan Monkey island which is located on the south coast of Hainan, the southernmost province of China. The island is a state-protected nature reserve of 1000 hectares which was established in 1965.There are more than 2,000 wild macaque monkeys One can only reach there by over water cable car ,the longest in China 2,138 metres. Nanwan Monkey Island is located in Lingshui county on the south coast of Hainan, the southernmost province of China. The island is a state-protected nature reserve for macaque monkeys.
This is a baby macaque monkey and there were lots of them with their mothers when we were there. They were very mischievous and visitors had to protect their belongings. These monkeys were very quick to ‘attack’ you if they suspect that you are hiding food ( not allowed to feed them in the reserve). One is not advised to put your hands into your pockets or to take things out of your backpack ( we learnt the hard way because we did not read the lengthy instructions what not to do on the island). You were also advised not to stare at them or go close because they are very protective of their babies. I enjoyed myself so much there because it was such a joy to see wild and free monkeys happily eating the plentiful fruits from the tropical forest, grooming and in a safe environment. I also found out that these monkeys love water and can swim very well.I was so mesmerised to see them in the water, they appeared to be able to dive and hold their breath for quite a distance.
