Mystery

Mystery

This is a pic I took last week that really captivates me. The mystery is that I am not exactly sure why. It is more an energy I feel than a specific aesthetic I think. Be interested to see if it speaks to anyone else.

I am really passionate about running workshops pertaining to images such as these. I have set up a group to promote and feature these workshops.

He is very inside-focussed and deep into his thoughts. I don’t know the circumstances of the your shot, but do you know the person or were you aware of his state of mind?

  • Tony Ryan replied

He was competing in a body building show the next day. Also was training 2 others so I think he was a bit tense.

Tony… i think it speaks of wisdom and balance…. the shadowing, body language and finally the concentrated light around his eyes and face suggest a natural movement of life force and energy… it’s as if he is absorbing his surroundings it a calm and vunerable condition. Nothing is rushed but all of that sensory stimuli is eventually radiated outward again in a purer stream of consciousness…... in otherwords he is enlightened…..................................b

  • Tony Ryan replied

    Hi Butch,

I think there is so much in this pic. I really just know I like it. The guy in the photo is a very strong energy and on the day had some pressing things on his mind. Had a bodybuilding show the next day and had been training himself and a couple of others very hard. I think aspects of his look and the light combined with his energy gives it an ancient Roman theme.

Awesome Portrait Tony!!. Your an inspiration to me and the masses. I used to think taking good Portraits consisted in getting all the face and shoulders into a shot. I was so wrong. This is great detail, and It’s teaching me new things. Your a graeat artist Tony and a blessing to all in RedBubbleland.

  • Tony Ryan replied

Thanks Trevor. I appreciate your thoughts. I think it is so important in photography as in life to be as self aware and in the moment as possible. I beleive we all give and receive emotional energy and the more relaxed we are the more empowered the result.

tony.. maybe that’s what i picked up in the body language … a kind of apprehension with the confidence to see through it…..... very esoteric sounding… i know….... i hope you are well too… i’ve thought of you lately… will write soon…..........b

  • Tony Ryan replied

Think this is perhaps the power of this shot. ie; That it has mystery about it and encourages us to go deeper. Look forward to hearing from you.

Oh yes! Now this one I like, a great deal. I’d put it right up there with ‘The Thinker’ ... by feel, impact, I mean; because, of course, ‘The Thinker’ would have been a we bit harder, and more impressive, to have actually made. lol

He looks like a man who must stay still to keep all the myriad thoughts from exploding out of his head and taking over the world, until he can sort them out for himself.

  • Tony Ryan replied

Great description of this person. I felt too that he had so much going on inside. It is so hard to feel deeply and not become overwhelmed. So hard to have the patience to slow down before acting.

He looks a little vulnerable, as if all his inner thoughts might be captured on film.. so he’s caught in a battle of his true self and the one he portrays… It’s a very intimate portrait. Somehow, the inclusion of the hand makes it even more so. Fantastic shot, Tony! :-)

  • Tony Ryan replied

Thanks Jennifer, love your description. I also like the hand being in the pic.

A question captured in a photo – “what is he thinking?” .. A deeply pensive look and yet he doesn’t look sad – there’s the slightest hint of smile in his mouth (when i look at it anyway).

Great shot – love the shadows, the cropping and the pose.

Tony, this does intrigue me, his pose, his apparent self-reflection, I want to talk to him, find out who he is, I want him to show me his body which looks like it is strong and muscular, and I love seeing these types of men in an introspective mood, it adds a very intriguing quality to their appearance. – Cora
