The Strength of Man

The Strength of Man

This particular shot was taken from a portfolio shoot from last weekend. It was Ben’s first modelling style shoot and he was very easy to work with. I found him to be very humble and took directions well.

I am sure he was nervous and out of his comfort zone but in listening and taking direction he received a great result with his shots. He is as you can see a very strongly built man and very powerful. Has also had a stint as a boxer.

Many men are in my opinion raised to be as physically powerful as possible. To be very tough and to never project weakness. However in my opinion the strongest man and the strongest person is not the one who looks the strongest but the one who is the most secure inside.

I felt Ben displayed both internal and external strength on his shoot day. He didn’t try to be stronger in the situation than he was feeling and in this honesty was strong and performed with strength and success.

I am really passionate about running workshops pertaining to images such as these. I have set up a group to promote and feature these workshops.

Tony… what a beautiful depiction of the strength of man here… when i look at this i dont see power radiated out… his body language and postioning seems to say that he is absorbing power from his surroundings.. i can almost see the invisible line of energy..going inwards to his solar plexus…..........the light seems to gather on his chest and is absorbed.. not reflected outward….... his face speaks of an awe for the quiet moment he is enjoying and rejuvenating from….......... anywho’s…...... that’s waht i take from this…...... thank you…..........b

  • Tony Ryan replied

Thanks Butch, was waiting for someone to comment on the description. I think te model is very honest and humble. As such he is allowing in some ways for people to draw feelings about how he is feeling. Many models put up a very strong or sexy exterior to ward off anyone who tries to see inside.

as usualy excellent portrait tony, very good use of lighting and always nice models my friend…
well I think you must try to take photos from women too… plus a composition between male – female, ...just an idea anyway…
    be well my friend!

I see a proud and shy man with a lot of character ,beautiful sensible shot.

  • Tony Ryan replied

Yes, I see someone who is committed to being the best person he can be. This takes so much courage these days where society tries to condition us to be normal and conforming rather than true.

Tony… not having the priviledge of knowing models or the “shoot” experience myself… it sounds like you are saying that many models may use their beauty an craft as a defense mechanism to actually hide from not only others but themselves…. seems like such a paradigm…...........b

  • Tony Ryan replied

    Hi Butch,

I think it is a people thing to put up a front under pressure. For many people pressure relates to what others think of them. A photograph can become such a vehicle for judgment that many people/models place such importance on the result that they put up a strong or confident front that often blocks their real emotional state of being. Does this make sense? Sometimes I find it hard to put into words what I feel. I know with this guy I didn’t feel the lack of trut that I feel in some.

  • butchart

    butchart

actually it makes wonderful sense tony….. and applys to the heart of what i was alluding to… what we the viewers see is not always the true inner emotion of the model but a defense mechanism of confidence and maybe even defiance…..... hope THAT makes some sense to you…...........b

  • Tony Ryan replied

Yes Butch , makes perfect sense. I think sometimes I get so deep into the feeling that I cloud my own clarity by using words.

I agree with you completely, the strongest of men are those who are secure in themselves, secure in who they are no matter their situation in life. This is a fantastic shot as even before I read your description the humility in his eyes caught my attention. I love the cleanliness of the shot, the black and white has a softness to it. I believe part of strength is being soft as well as solid. Nicely done.

hmm… I don’t know I can see the actual photography is done well and I can see his body is well built, but I can’t see anything special here outside of those.

Of course, his face reminds me of my Ex, I just realized, so maybe that’s the problem
