This is an older photo, taken on film and recently scanned via negative to my computer. I took this on a previous trip to Sri Lanka in 2006.

You are looking at Galle beach, on the southern coast of the island. This beach was one of the coastlines hit by the tsunami of 2004. To give an indication of the size of the waves, they reached half way up the largest palm tree, as they came in. Over 40,000 lives were lost in Sri Lanka alone (over 200,000 world wide). So this piece is dedicated to all who lost lives, loved ones and homes in this disaster.

The country has since picked up the pieces and carried on. You just can’t keep these people down for too long! Saddening and inspiring at once, watching them overcome the tsunami and a civil war.

I remember….I sent money to a carnivorous plant grower in Sri Lanka, so he could help out his local community….was a very sad time….I love what you’ve done here Andrew!

  • That is such a wonderful thing to have done Mel, that money would have gone such a long way over there!! It was one of the worst things I’ve witnessed, but it was so reassuring to know they got back on their feet again.
