I captured this guy at the Dehiwela Zoo in Colombo, Sri Lanka. This African Brown Lion is six years old and was napping in his enclosure. As soon as my shutter sounded, his eye opened and he glared up at me with an alarming amount of anger. I’d clearly disrupted a deep sleep.

Suddenly, I was really glad to be 10 metres above him and not face to face.

The lions here, like many of the animals within the zoo, are part of a breeding program to keep their species away from extinction. At the time we visited, the leopards were being bred. One male and one female in each breeding cage. It was great to see such positive activity toward our animals future in this zoo.

Fantastic shot! My memories of Colombo Zoo are of miserable animals in awful enclosures – glad to hear your tales of positive breeding programs …so happy things have improved:)

  • I’m so happy to report that a lot has changed in the zoo! I was so hesitant to go in, but so glad I did now. Thanks heaps Denzil :)
