Sonic Acrobat by Andrew Paranavitana

This could be the most important photo I have taken so far.

Dean, some of you would know, is my best mate. He also happens to be one of the best progessive house and techno DJs in the country. He called me last week and told me Beat Magazine, Melbourne’s most circulated street press paper, was doing an interview / photo spot on him. He had the interview questions, and needed the photo.

See Beat Magazine Article here

Dean and I had planned to take more shots for his DJing career, but had to accelerate the process to the very next day.

So Dean, his girlfriend Myriah and myself went to a local shopping centre for this shoot. Dean had an idea of repetition in the background for his shots, and we eventually found this section, perfect for what we wanted.

Many shots later, this turned out to be one of the favourites. I have to agree, I love the pose in this. Instantly it reminded me of an acrobat preparing for a tumble or roll. I was also reminded of the way Dean DJs, spinning, looping and throwing together sounds to make things work in peaks and troughs. Perfectly balancing a set, jumping ahead of everyone to put on quite possibly, the greatest show on earth for anyone who is listening.

This was such an amazing opportunity, to be able to help your mate out is one thing, but we have helped each other, in a way that not many could. I’m really thankful to Dean for allowing me the chance to do this for him, and for having the faith in me too. What an incredible thing to go through together!

Dean runs and plays at Overnoise, a once a month party at Miss Libertines, and is in alliance with The Likes Of You and Stable Parties.
You can catch one of Dean’s sets at Derailed @ Vault 8, Melbourne, every Saturday night.

Original shot layered 3 times over, one b&w, one colour, one desaturated. Contrast increased, brightness and hue saturation increased.

I’ve Dj’d and remixed for many a year and think if i’d have had a mate take a shot like this of me for a great magazine like Beat, then i would’nt be sitting in my office right now lol!
Good luck with this pal, hope it brings great things for you and Dean!

  • Mate, that is such a huge compliment, thanks very much! I’d love to see Dean playing Global Gathering soon!! You’re a dj mate? What are these remixes?? Would love to hear..

Great concept; the patterns are very rhythmic and the comp’s got a good layout. What I’m getting from his pose and expression is that Dean loves the energy of his work, but likes quieter moments too (I could be totaly wrong though). In any case, it’s a wonderful shot.

  • Aileen, I owe you for that one.. Wow, you just described Dean to a tee!! That’s pretty much how he goes about life. It’s incredible to me, as none of that was consciously taken into consideration when we did these shots. We thought they were so appropriate though, and this is obviously why. Thank you SO very much! :)

Excellent work and what a fantastic opportunity, sounds like a great day. I love the red bars, almost hints at classical String instruments (harps etc..) but with an urban feel, sticking with the strong musical theme. Fab stuff. Great title. Very cool, very indie/DJ…
    album cover possibly ???
    Nice one mate,

  • Hey mate, thanks so much! Opportunity was incredible, we had heaps of fun doing it. I can’t actually believe you just said “harp”.. the whole time I have been creating and finishing this one off, I felt it reminded me of something, but couldn’t place it.. you hit the nail on the head! Thanks heaps mate, appreciate your great insight very much and of course, the fav too! This could hopefully one day be an album or vinyl cover, I’ll stay in the good books with Deano for it ;)
