Paradise Lost

Santiago, capital city of Chile.

This is the view from the top of the look out at St Lucia Park. The building that leads the climb to the top is seen in World Forgotten. There is nothing like being in a city and being able to see snow capped mountain tops in the near distance. (45 bus ride takes you to the Andes Mountains).

As incredible a place as Santiago is, the city has unfortunately been built in a valley, which has trapped the smog and pollution over the years. The view of the Andes, as seen here, is slowly being obliterated by the smokey sky.

After speaking with a few locals, they are predicting only 10 – 20 years until the view is faded away to smog totally. It will be a sad day indeed, when the Andes can’t be seen at such a short distance.

Very thought provoking and sobering image. My husband and son were there in August of ‘05 or ‘06 .. they went to Portillo for the skiing … and in the images they took there is a grayness to the sky, too. I don’t think they realized it was smog, tho … well, let’s hope they figure out how to solve the problem!!!

  • parmi replied 27 days ago

Such an amazing place to ski! I actually didn’t realise it was smog and pollution until I spoke to locals and a tour leader about it. I really hope they find a way to let it all out soon. It’s far too incredible a sight to lose forever.

I really love the effects here Andrew. (Looks like another old picture found in a grandmother’s album.) It took me a while to see the Andes and that is very sad regarding the pollution. What a picturesque view though. Congratulations on your feauture.

  • parmi replied 26 days ago

Thank you so much Rosa! The texturing did make the Andes fade a little more than it really is, but when we were there, we looked at it for a second, thinking they were clouds, then reality hit.. pretty amazing moment. I really hope the view doesn’t vanish for good, it’s too special to lose! Cheers for the great comment and feedback :)

When I first saw this, my first thought was …I feel like I’m living in the 70’s (Skyhooks).....I have recently come across some of my older (70’s) photos & this one takes me back again … mine you I was only a small child then….Excellent work Andrew…

  • parmi replied 18 days ago

Ah yes, the entire city of Santiago has a definite 70s feel to it, so many buildings from that time, hasn’t really been updated. So nice to hear this one takes you back there!! I only just scraped into the 70s, so I have no real memory of it :)
