Rainbow Drowning

This is my first attempt playing with food dye, water and my computer monitor as a brightly lit backdrop.

See here for how I created this shot. (The stack of dvds were implemented after this shot was taken)

This was pretty damn difficult without a tripod or assistant.. One hand holding the camera , one hand holding the dropper, full of dye. Having to get focus on the camera, hold it straight, shoot and drop the dye at once.. I need a tripod haha!

I had heaps of fun trying to make this work though. Soon learning that dropping the dye closer to the front of the glass allowed for more clarity in the shot.

The next step will be multiple colours, but not till a tripod is involved lol.

Food Dy?? & you made fun of my chopping boards ….lol… for a moment I thought it was smoke art… well done Andrew

  • parmi replied

Haha, I liked the chopping board ideas! This was heaps of fun, but tedious and slightly high maintenance too. I like experimenting in the home as much as you do!! Thanks a lot Maria :)

A very creative image ! A hard shot too. A nice little table or chair at the right height would make a great place to sit the camera for a timed capture.

  • parmi replied

Thanks mate, that’s a damn good idea too, I always go about things the hard way lol! Looking forward to round two of this shoot soon :)

Hey Parmi, are you entering into the Canon Eos Photo 5 competition? This would be great for the liquid themed shot.

  • parmi replied

Up until now I had no idea about the comp at all mate. Thanks heaps for the heads up, I’m looking at the site now and will enter! Cheers mate, really appreciate it!

  • James MacKay

    James MacKay

Just be aware that the only one you can enter into now is the ‘Practically Black’ theme which is the open theme. All the boxes went ages ago sorry. But you can see all the details on the site. I haven’t taken one picture for it yet…...so much for thinking creative haha

  • parmi replied

Ah well that makes sense.. was wondering why it wouldn’t accept the entry lol! All good mate, I don’t actively seek out photo competitions, so it’s good to know this one runs. I’ll be keeping my eye out for more like this now!

  • parmi replied

Ahh you joined up mate! Welcome to the bubble.. Yes, would have been a lot easier if I had bothered to do this while you were here!! Completely forgot about the oil actually, will give that one a go next time for sure!

Excellent capture Andrew, I feel your pain on this one mate, I tried a similar thing with smoke and although I had a tripod I had to improvise with the lighting etc. I think you’ve pulled of a cracker of a shot here despite only having 2 hands lol

  • parmi replied

Haha, yeah it was a task mate! Thanks heaps Jus, glad you like it mate. I do get a bit of satisfaction doing it without all the real set up, but man, the frustration that comes with it, as I’m sure you can relate! That smoke shot is awesome mate! I’m fascinated how smoke and water can create such similar patterns :)
