Mindcircus
Different?
My depiction of the mind of someone in personal struggle with society. The light and the dark, happy and sad, known and unknown. All of this moving with random thought processes, pop culture, gossip, media influence, culture clashes and a lot of the time, white noise to fill whatever silence is left. This is modern society. Confusing, confronting, intimidating and at times down right scary. Which way do we go?
Title of this piece I have borrowed from one of my favourite songs:
“..can I please have some silence. How about some space..“
Mindcircus – Way Out West.
City Of Melbourne Musuem. Not the one in Carlton, housing dinosaur bones and relics though. This is the nondescript one on Spring Street, in the old Treasury Building. It showcases the history of Melbourne as a city, from colonisation to today.
This was taken in the vaults, underground. Which have been turned into an interactive journey through the gold rush days. This particular room had only a tv and light in it, both of modern look. The contrast grabbed my attention straight away. It had a spooky yet familiar effect on me. I didn’t know what to make of it, but I kept looking at it, unsure what to think or feel.
Slight crop of original photo. Desaturated all and selectively coloured tv screen. Increased contrasted and brightness to achieve higher levels of mood.

You know – I don’t think this image actually needs most of the explanation – that is exactly the struggle and the dissonance that it emanates so so strongly – wonderful work!

Andrew, this is some kind of special mate, the lighting and textures on the wall give this piece such an ominous feel, scary but wonderful. I had this on in the background when I saw this which seemed earily relevant..spooky huh (well for me it was)

Spooky indeed mate! The Pumpkin’s.. man I miss them now. They sang exactly what I am trying to communicate through this! How awesome to have it playing at the same time. Thanks so much mate, that’s an awesome interpretation and comment on this one, really appreciate it!!

Sorry, missed this, the texture on that wall, just fab, has the impression of a metalic surface, Im thinking carbonite ? Wonderful lighting, and the tv image. So, living room,tv, and yet so disturbia….
cheers,
h
parmi replied
Disturbia – I like that a lot, exactly the vein I am thinking along mate. Great observation with the wall, it does have a metallic look. It was actually painted stone, a brownish / taupe colour originally, but i think my processing changed the look of it slightly. Just love hearing your interpretation and views on my work H, thanks mate!
