The Namib Desert, Namibia, Southern Africa. Taken around 4pm. We had spent a good few hours trekking through the desert, with a guide showing us everything a person would need to know to survive out there alone. This was about 5 minutes away from the spot where Forsaken was taken.

It’s such a vast expanse of desolation. The idea of being caught out here on your own is terrifying. Extreme temperatures and scorching sun by day, and near freezing temperature at night, it’s a place to visit, but not to stay.

I wanted to capture some of that isolated, barren and incredibly steep surfaces of the dunes. I chose b&w to enhance the emptiness and ‘desertion’.

Minor adjustment of contrast and saturation to enhance the dune shadows.

Great tones in this Andrew! Love the use of light and shadow and the natural abstract quality of this image. I always really enjoy your descriptions as well….and yes….this doesn’t look like a place that I would like to be stranded in despite the beauty of it! Wonderful capture :)

  • parmi replied

Thanks Shelly! It’s such an amazing place, the vastness of it is almost unbelievable and a bit scary. Glad you enjoy my descriptions too, I like to create a scene for the scene, if that makes sense haha.

This is just awesome. Great shot!! I can imagine that it would be a bit scary being out there for any length of time. I personally didn’t know where this desert was, so I Googled it. The little tag that says it’s here was on a blank screen….VERY DESOLATE!! I had to move it out at least 4 times before I could see anything I recognized as a map. Nice to learn that it’s in Africa….you may want to add that, it’s a nice addition to Postcard Style.

  • parmi replied

Thank you very much Elizabeth! It’s such a vast expanse of desert, in amongst the middle of nowhere. Mind blowing place to visit, very humbling. Thanks for the tip about adding Africa, didn’t think of that, easy to forget others haven’t been or know where it is :)

Thanks a lot H, I think you would love it here. Has an ethereal effect when you’re there. Have you seen The Cell? If you have, all the desert dream sequences were shot here. Twisted film, but I can see why they chose this location!

Hey Andrew….at first glance, one couldn’t tell whether they are ocean waves or sand dune forms. The image is Very pleasent at first, then the darkness draws you in & leaves one to feel a sense of relief that one is not left there too long… Very dramatic in B&W high key …. it delivers the exact extreme contrasting elements of the desert… well done.

  • parmi replied

Thanks very much Maria :) I’m really pleased that once again my communications through image have come across to you directly and exactly. Everything you have stated is what I wanted to convey, contrast in many elements. Thanks for the fantastic comment and analysis :)
