Central Vortex
The old Shot Tower and new Glass Cone at Melbourne Central shopping centre. The Coops Shot Tower was built in 1890 and was incorporated into the development of the new shopping complex, which was completed in 1990. It is now the feature of the central court, with a huge glass and steel cone to highlight it. I have always found the contrast between the two styles of architecture intriguing. It’s something i have wanted to photograph for a very long time.

I thought i recognized this shot from somewhere! My brother has one of the same buildings but from outside the cone! This is brilliant Andrew! I love the patters that this angle gives the artwork, and the combo of old and new is fantastic! Love this! :)
parmi replied
Hey there Fiona, thanks for such an awesome comment and compliment!! I’ve tried many times to capture this cone from outside, but never got there! I’m glad you can now see what it looks like inside and out :)
Fiona Christensen
its a pleasure Andrew! i think my brother got it with the skyscraper on the side (the one you have in your background) with the cone and old building! have no idea how he got it right (took me awhile to figure out how his image worked and to differetiate between the scraper and cone butit came out well) :) but i like this angle better to be honest, it really contrats the two spectacularly! ;)
parmi replied
Ahh right, the skyscraper and cone are meant to represent something, but I can’t remember what now! Thanks again, I love getting insightful feedback like this :)
Susie Peek-Swint
Wow what a cool-looking building .. love the old with the ultra-modern ~ reminds me of the cone of a rocket ~ great shot!
parmi replied
Thanks heaps Susie! It’s in the middle of a shopping centre in Melbourne, and just soars up to the sky, really interesting structure in the building :)
