the lovely and busy town of Port St.Martin de Ré on the Ile de Ré after wandering around the town, watching the clouds come and go and looking for the ever important Ice Cream Vendor (of which there were none!) we left the town just as dusk started to approach. Next time we will linger a while longer I hope!
The Ile de Re is a beautiful island in the Bay of Biscay, it is accessed from mainland La Rochelle by way of a bridge (not as big as the bridge to Il d’Oleron). Once on the Island you can either walk, cycle or drive quite happily around. Most of the buildings are single storey due to the high winds and sea level. The white bungalows in the towns are added to with either blue or green shutters and doors and in June-September a plethora of Hollyhocks add to the quaintness of the towns.
