Swallowtail Catapillar
I found this rather extraordinary catapillar in the garden eating from a weed! I say extraordinary as I have never seen one but I am sure they are quite popular!

Ahhh thank you Hawker I was hoping you would spot this one :)) Now I know! I am thrilled as the Swallowtail is one of my all time fave butterflies :) do they nest in trees do you know? Pam and thank you btw for your comment it is much appreciated :)
Hawker
The female lays her eggs in the Prunus spinosa and also in trees or scrubs of the prunus family. I hope this what you wanted to know Pamela.
Pamela Jayne S... replied
Thank you kindly Hawker :) the reason I ask is that yearly in the Pine tree we get a white nest and we were told that the catapillars are processional and will harm the cats and dogs if they come into contact, but if it is likely that there are other Butterflies as well that lay in the tree then that is great :) I leave the nests and so far the dog and cats have avoided them when they leave the nests! But this I have never seen before so totally thrilled :)

Fab image and yes a beautiful butterfly Pam, but be aware of the white nests, it sounds like processionary. The pine processionary caterpillar are fatal to dogs. Cats are usually more sensible and don’t go round liking everything, but their hairs can kill dogs and cats in hours….............. or their tongues drop off. White nests usually in pine trees are processionary catapillars. The caterpillars drop from the nests and if a dog or cat ingests any hairs even off the ground where the caterpillars have been they kill, very very quickly…........... Get Rob to cut the nest out and burn them. Don’t take the risk. Also donot get it on his skin, can cause major irritation. The only way to get rid of them is to burn them! They are very common in Spain and I have seen dogs with no tongues and others that have died.

Thank you for the info Celia, we have just been lucky so far I guess, we will address the situation this year! I don’t even like the tree where it is really – it’s only these nests and the Squirrel that profit from it! I feel a tree chopping session coming on!
