Oh my goodness, John. This is absolutely SUPERB! I think this is the best hummingbird photo I’ve ever seen. You win top honors; go to the head of the class and collect the gold medal!
Thanks Bonnie. If you would have seen the original file ??? I shot in Raw+jpg with flash at a high shutter speed and low 100 ISO. The flash failed to fire and the original shot was headed to the trash, but since I barely see a tinge of the red at the base of the neck I decided to go ahead and process the raw and see what I could recover. I’d say this shot is an excellent testament to the claims of benefit of raw to recovering detail in either highlights or shadows. I have been able to do that (to an extent) with many photos, but never to the degree I was able to do with this one. Suffice it to say, I was amazed with the resulting image. I’ll send you an email with the before and after … you will be amazed, I’m sure.

WONDERFUL capture…very colorful indeed John
Gorgeous! I’ve been taking a lot of photos of these beautiful birds myself, since we’ve got them hanging out in our backyard at our feeders! They happily sit on the fence or feeder for me, though, so I don’t have to work so hard at getting their pictures! :)
Fantastic capture John well done! So Beautiful :)
Awesome capture of this stunning little Hummer John.
