White Breasted Nuthatch

White-breasted Nuthatches are agile birds that creep along trunks and large branches, probing into bark furrows with their straight, pointed bills. Like other nuthatches, they often turn sideways and upside down on vertical surfaces as they forage. They don’t lean against their tails the way woodpeckers do.
A common feeder bird with clean black, gray-blue markings on the back, and frosty white face and underparts. The black or gray cap and neck frame the face and make it look like this bird is wearing a hood. White-breasted Nuthatches are active, agile little birds with an appetite for insects and large, meaty seeds. They get their common name from their habit of jamming large nuts and acorns into tree bark, then whacking them with their sharp bill to “hatch” out the seed from the inside. White-breasted Nuthatches may be small but their voices are loud, and often their insistent nasal yammering will lead you right to them.

Beautiful capture…I really like the fact you captured his red underparts…very nice!!

Thanks Beve, I was happy too when I saw result and that nothing seemed to get lost in the shadows. I have had a few decent shots of these guys in the past and it is very difficult to get a good clear shot all around with good even lighting … I lucked out on this one. The only additional element I would have liked to see was that little catchlight in his eye … oh well.

These guys are so adorable. They hang from my feeder and birdbath upside down frequently… great shot of this one rightside up!
