Cesenatico – Italy

In this is region of Adriatic Coast the fishermen have a special way to trawl the fish. Along the (artificial or natural) channels in the huge wetlands of Po River Natural Park you can see these specially designed wooden huts with a footbridge to the water. There the square nets are attached to a kind of lifting mechanism to allow the fishermen to place the nets into the water. In my photos you can see these nets hanging in the air, waiting for the fishermen to lift them down, already halfway in the water or completely underwater. Then the men only have to wait a while, lift the nets back into the air and grab the catch of the day. It is fascinating to watch and while I was driving along the coast I was amazed how many of these huts and nets are found along the waterways. The fish they catch here are small sardine-like ones. I didn’t actually taste some, but next time I will and will also spend more time to watch the men on their daily life.

An excellent photo Paolo, that captures the nets at different stages of the up-down sequence. This fishing technique is practiced, in a culturally different variety of ways, around the world. When I saw it in China and Vietnam, the fishermen had huge lights that they suspended over the centre of the nets, to attract the fish, like moths, at night. It did make me wonder if the lights did in fact attract insects which in turn attracted feeding fish? In Thailand, along the Chao Phraya River, I saw many similar nets suspended just outside people’s houses.

  • Very interesting write.Thank-you.For dropping by & taking a look at my captures. Much appreciated

    Nice capture and work!
I love these huts – we have them on the coast here in SW France, sadly for our fishermen though – the hurricane Xynthia tore right through most of them – a very sad day! When we go to our favourite beach now all that is left is the posts!

  • Sorry to hear this.thank you so very much for the nice comment
